MARIA DA LUZ SIMOES

With deep sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother at the age of 100, at her home on Tuesday, June 29, 2021.
Maria da Luz was predeceased by her loving husband Luis Simoes; her parents, António and Maria Luisa Martins; brother, four sisters and many extended family members. She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her children, Helena (Jack), Céu, Fátima (Orlindo), Connie, José Luis (Connie), and Tony (Teresa); as well as 14 grandchildren and 12 beautiful great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Isaura and Fernanda, many nieces, nephews and friends in Canada and Portugal.
Our mother, the youngest of six children, was born on November 7, 1920. She was only three months old when her father passed away during the Spanish Flu pandemic. She was born and raised in Vale das Casas, Vila de Rei, Portugal. Upon getting married she moved to Lisbon where she raised her children. In 1966 she immigrated to Canada with her family. She was a homemaker and enjoyed helping to look after her grandchildren.
Maria da Luz was very devoted to her church, attended all religious services, and found comfort in praying the rosary everyday. In her prayers, she always remembered everyone.
Our mother especially loved being surrounded by her family, when still able, had all her children and their families together for lunch every Sunday. She was very talented, a great cook, enjoyed reading and gardening. When she was no longer as mobile, she would crochet beautiful little soap bags. Anyone who ever knew her has probably received at least one.
The family would like to express our deepest gratitude to our amazing sister Céu who was her closest companion and main caregiver.
We would also like to thank the Home Care staff, who took such good care of our mother with their caring and compassion.
Due to current Covid restrictions, a private Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, July 6 at the Immaculate Conception Church followed by interment at the Assumption Cemetery, officiated by Father André Lico.
Your prayers and remembrances of Maria da Luz will be greatly appreciated.

Descanse em paz querida Mae,
Avó e Bisavó.

Forever in our hearts.
