IRENE MARIE HALLGRIMSON
November 11, 1936 - July 12, 2021
Irene was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She will be greatly missed by daughter Elin (Wadood), son Kenneth (Suzanne); grandchildren, Tyler (Stefanie), Nadia (Kieran), Zachary, Stefan, Christian and Alex; siblings, Betty, Patrick (Sandy), Gordon (Cheryl), Bernard, Diane (Gil), Jeff (Sharon); and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband Leifur, daughter Norine, siblings, Kathleen, Winnifred (Denny), Harry (Kay), Sidney (Barb), John, Mary Anne and David (Jenni).
Born to Henry and Catherine Morris, Irene grew up in the Weston neighbourhood. She was proud of her athletic endeavours, particularly in baseball and basketball. She worked for the provincial government and, during that time, met her dear husband Leifur. She later worked at Statistics Canada.
Irene was dedicated to her family, sharing memories and special bonds with many siblings, nieces and nephews. She supported Leifur in his career and made a happy home and childhood for her children. She was embraced by Leifur's extended family, the Brynjolfsons, Sigurdsons and Thordarsons, and became an active part of the Icelandic community.
Irene found her calling as a grandmother - she adored her grandchildren and loved to spoil them. She was always there for them, for life's big moments and the little ones, and was eager to brag about them to anyone who would listen. She held, and will always hold, a special place in their hearts.
Irene was kind, hardworking, independent, and determined. She had a sharp sense of humour and enjoyed joking and teasing in her own special way. Irene was always a friendly face and truly enjoyed connecting with people, whether it was an acquaintance, neighbour, or good friend. She maintained connections with many over the years, always keen for a phone call or cup of tea with friends. She had a way with children, always making them feel that they mattered. She was "Grandma Irene" to more than a few. Irene was thoughtful and generous, frequently knitting toques to donate and baking goodies for her loved ones.
Irene was a member of First Lutheran Church, where she enjoyed the community, particularly the FLCW, and volunteering her time. Leifur and Irene helped establish Prairie Places Inc. for their darling Norine, and Irene worked tirelessly on the Board for many years. Irene enjoyed more than 40 summers at her special place, the cottage in Sandy Hook, where she had many happy memories.
She will be greatly missed.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a service will not be held at this time.
If desired, donations may be made to Rossbrook House or to First Lutheran Church.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)
Our heartfelt sympathy from the Brandson family. Leifur and Irene were wonderful friends to my parents Gestur and Beth Brandson at First Lutheran Church. They worked alongside each other on the parish council and ladies circle (FLCW). Irene always kept a warm and consistent contact with my mother as she aged and was unable to attend church anymore. This kindness she extended to me after the passing of my mom. The Hallgrimson family has truly been blessed by such a wonderful woman in their life. She will be greatly missed by all. God bless. - Posted by: Lorraine Brandson (Friend ) on: Aug 16, 2021

Our sincere sympathy to the family in the loss of Irene. We always appreciated the fellowship with Irene at First Lutheran. We usually sat close together swapping stories of the day. Irene was an integral member of First Lutheran's 125th anniversary organizing committee providing much needed support and ideas and advice. Our thoughts are with you the family at this time.
