March 20, 1975 - September 12, 2021

It is with broken hearts that we advise of the passing of Matthew Pearce Thordarson, on September 12, 2021.
Matthew will be deeply missed by his parents, Vic and Deb; sisters, Jill and Jori (Chris); children, Nolan, Austin and Sienna, and their mother Crystal Desmarais; partner, Lisa Atkinson; nieces, Freyja and Fjola; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Matt was born on March 20, 1975 and arrived as the first child to Vic and Deb Thordarson on May 12, 1976. He was lovingly raised in Gimli, Manitoba, alongside his little sisters, many cousins and friends, and the Bailey family. Matt was the happiest, most beautiful baby; so very chubby, with beautiful black hair, and a spectacular smile. He was very affectionate and could never sleep without a hug and kiss from his parents.
As he grew older, Matt's talents became limitless and he excelled at anything he tried. He was athletic and artistic; tall and lean and strong, and with that same, effortless smile he brought joy and laughter to everyone around him.
Matt's star shone bright as an on-camera reporter with APTN, telling both light-hearted stories to make people laugh and those raising critically important issues related to Indigenous peoples and communities.
Matthew had his father's gentle spirit, and his mother's natural inclination to share, protect, and take care of others. He was a passionate advocate for his community of Point Douglas, where he knew every neighbour by name and organized countless events to build connection and community.
Nothing made Matt more happy or proud than his children. Nolan, Austin and Sienna are the blessed beneficiaries of Matt's goofy sense of humour, artistic abilities, and his unparalleled smile. We are eternally grateful to see Matt's reflection in the faces of his beloved children. Matt was always a loving and protective big brother to Jill and Jori, and the three siblings will forever share an unbreakable bond.
We would like to be clear - Matt did not lose his battle with addiction. Yes, he lost his life - but he died sober and he died bravely - with grace, humility and humour. He died telling his truth. Matthew had already won.
Losing Matt so suddenly and so early, has forced our family to the edge of what our minds can understand. It is only with the wisdom of our hearts - - and by modelling Matt's strength - - that we will walk this path forward alongside his children - - knowing all the while that Matt has returned to his rightful place in the Spirit World, among the stars.
We are all so fiercely proud of you, Matt. And we love you.
A service to remember Matthew will take place on Sunday, September 19, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Farmers Hall in Gimli, MB. Masks are mandatory and we respectfully ask that people are double vaccinated if they wish to attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Rossbrook House in Winnipeg.
