EDITH JANET JOHNSON
(née BOYD)
1928 - 2021

With a sense of deep sadness, as well as gratitude for a long life well lived, we announce the death of Edith Janet Johnson, in her 94th year. She died peacefully at home, surrounded by the love of family and friends, on October 26, 2021.
Edith and twin brother Ed were born at home on their parents' farm in La Riviere, Manitoba on September 18, 1928. She always spoke fondly of her happy childhood growing up on the farm with her siblings, and with numerous family members in the vicinity. As a young woman, she moved to Winnipeg to begin work and this is where she met her husband, Carl Johnson. They started their lives together in their home in East Kildonan, where they lived for over 60 years and where they raised their two daughters. Over the years, there was always a beloved pet or two as part of their family. Edith was a homemaker while her children were young. Once they were older, she returned to the workforce and worked at the Department of Highways, where she enjoyed her job and made many friends.
After retirement, she enjoyed trying new recipes from her extensive collection and took great pride in sharing her baking and cooking with family and friends. She enjoyed sewing and knitting, completing numerous hats for NICU babies and blankets for dogs at the Humane Society, until very recently. She loved sharing the bounty from their large backyard garden, sitting in a comfortable chair with a good book, and cheering on the Jets and Bombers, but you didn't want to disturb her if a curling game was on! She was physically active, walking kilometers every day and taking part in yoga and exercise classes, almost to the end of her life. She also maintained a very sharp mind, even as the years progressed, keeping up to date on current events, attending to her finances, and remembering birthdays and anniversaries. What she delighted in most, however, was hearing about the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She cherished time spent with family and her home was the gathering place for holiday dinners and special occasions.
She was married to her husband, Carl, for 64 years, who predeceased her in October, 2016. She was also predeceased by her parents, Edgar and Janet Boyd, and by her older sister, Kathleen.
Missing her are her two daughters, Cheryl and Susan, her two sons-in-law, Douglas and Bruce, her two granddaughters, Signy (Derek) and Tegan, and her two great-grandchildren. Also missing her are her twin brother Ed (Merle), sister Mary (Dick, deceased), sister-in-law Rosemary (Bob), and numerous nieces and nephews.
We would like to send a thank-you to the staff at the Waverley who did so much for her during the worst of the COVID restrictions, and to her friends there who shared many good times. Thanks also to Home Care and Palliative Care for their assistance over the past few weeks, and to the medical teams who had an active role in Mom's journey.
As per her wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no formal funeral service. A private family interment will take place at a later date.
Should you wish to honour Edith's memory, a donation may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or any pet rescue organization.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • So sorry to hear of Aunt Edith's passing. I always loved spending time with Aunt Edith and Uncle Carl (AKA "Swede" according to my dad...LOL). There were always a lot of laughs when we all visited Grandma Boyd way back when. Edith and Carl were both great people and will very much be missed by friends and family. All the best regards to cousins Cheryl and Susan and condolences for the loss of your dear mom. Cherish the memories. - Posted by: Steve Coe (Nephew) on: Nov 09, 2021

  • Edith was my big sister (well not really big in size) but very big in her caring helpful and generous persona. As I was the youngest kid in the family, she was the person who I went for comfort and advice. She loved her twin brother and loved her pups and kittens. She was always a hard worker and had many talents. We always kept in touch though many miles separated us. Rest In peace my little big sister - Posted by: Mary Coe (Sister ) on: Nov 08, 2021

  • Edith was a guiding light to me as a child. Six years older than me she was kind and tolerant. I remember her love for animals, especially dogs. She shared her love with many over the years. She had a good sense of humour and was a lady of very many talents. Rest easy my sister and friend. - Posted by: Mary Coe (Sister) on: Nov 06, 2021

  • Cheryl and Susan and families: I truly loved your mom. Her kindness and caring nature meant so much to me. (Not to mention the coats she made for my dear Pepper) Her calls were always a joy and she always genuinely wanted to know how our family was doing. I also have the fondest memories of dear Janet. I knew no one in LaRiviere and she was so welcoming and made sure I never felt lonely. I, as I said, felt the same caring spirit from your mom. So I will always honoUr Edith. It was important to me to pass this message on to you. - Posted by: Vivian Johnson (Aunt and friend ) on: Nov 06, 2021
