  • I was so sorry to learn the news of your loss of Robert. My heart goes out to you and your family during this tender time. - Posted by: Steinunn Bessason (Friend) on: Jan 08, 2022

  • Dear Ruth and boys, Robert was one of my favourite people to work with and socialize with. He was always positive, gracious and supportive of others, adults and students alike. At work we had our serious situations and our humorous ones. I always enjoyed visits to Willow Island and trading stories with Robert. The two of you were great hosts. I will sincerely miss him and his good natured greetings. He has left a great legacy in Gimli and Gimli High School. Doug Anderson - Posted by: Doug Anderson (Friend and co-worker) on: Dec 17, 2021

  • Ruth and family - my first memory of Robert was on the beach in Gimli as a young teen. I was sitting on the beach watching him and Victor throwing a football around. Robert glided over the sand - not an easy feat - catching every pass with amazing grace. A true athlete. I am sure opportunities away from Gimli were always available but he chose to remain close to home. Falling in love with Ruth was a natural progression. Ruth I am so sorry for your loss. You and your family are in my heart. - Posted by: Jerry Butler (Friend) on: Dec 11, 2021

  • Thank you Sir, For being a Mentor and a Role Model to me my entire life! You saw something in me others didn't and encouraged me to work hard so everyone could see what you saw, for that I am eternally grateful. • Ruth and family, we are sharing in your sorrow with love and friendship. Please accept our deepest condolences. Robert's great heart has stopped beating, but a heart that has touched so many lives can’t help but live on in those that loved him, and there were so many that loved Robert. Someone so special can never be forgotten, and he will forever be remembered by everyone he touched. He had a special connection with every student over the years he was a teacher and a principal, and had a special way of guiding and encouraging the athletes on the teams he coached. Robert played an important role as a leader in the Evergreen School Division and was instrumental in guiding the Evergreen School Board for many years after he retired from teaching. Robert also played an important part in community-related activities and committees. Robert and Ruth were an awesome couple, and raised a caring and responsible family. We feel so much for the family who will miss Robert so much. We will all miss Robert and no words can describe how sorry we are for your loss of such a strong member of your family and of the whole community of Gimli. - Posted by: Lloyd & Jeannette Roche (Friends) on: Dec 04, 2021

  • My condolences to the Arnason family on your loss. May you rest in peace Robert, I will miss seeing you and spending time together solving the problems of the world, or talking about sport and how the Bombers are going to do that year. I enjoyed competing against you and your teams it was always a battle but when the game was over we were friends, sitting in the gym office talking about how things went wrong or right. Until we meet again RIP, my friend. - Posted by: Gudmundur Boundy (friend) on: Dec 04, 2021

  • In my university lectures to education students, I include anecdotes and stories about the people who shaped my education philosophy and were my mentors and role models. One I often refer to in my stories was my friend Robert Arnason. When I learned of his passing this weekend I was shocked and sad as so many were. I have been reflecting on how lucky I was to have Robert in my life. Robert was my PhysEd teacher. He was a natural athlete demonstrating not only the technique and skill required in many sports but his athletic ability and passion for fitness and recreation. He coached many teams and remained active as long as he was able. Robert was my coach. I remember his constant encouragement and friendly cajoling. As if it were yesterday I remember scrambling to dive and put a volleyball in play, on one side of the court, recovering to go across to the opposite side to keep it in play, and Robert smiling from the bench “Come on Bjornson, move it!” As a coach he was encouraging and supportive and had a great sense of humour. He challenged us to work hard, to be better athletes, but always emphasized being respectful and promoting good sportsmanship. Robert was my principal. He interviewed me right out or university and hired me for my first teaching job back at my alma mater. As principal he was incredibly supportive of his staff and had fostered a very positive culture in our school community. He encouraged teachers to try new things and when I had an idea to try something new his advice was always sought and appreciated. “Robert I have an idea?” He would smile, role his eyes and say “How much is this going to cost and where are you going to get the money”. He always found a way to support his staff. Robert was my friend. It was always great to bump into the “old coach” which wasn’t often enough. He would always say “Stop by any time” and unfortunately I had not done so. More recently I was happy to get “caught up” via Facebook. I never had taken the opportunity to tell him how much I would tell stories in my classes about his leadership and influence. I was lucky to have a mentor like Robert in my life and shared that with my students today. I hope they are lucky enough to have a mentor and leader like Robert in their lives. - Posted by: Peter Bjornson (Friend) on: Dec 01, 2021
