DALE COLLEEN SCHMEICHEL
April 29, 1953 - March 8, 2022

With heavy hearts, Dale's family announces her peaceful passing at the age of 68 on Tuesday, March 8, 2022, at Misericordia Place. Her final days were spent in the company of loved ones, including her brother Allan Smakula; four children, David, Brian (Joanna), Angela (Jesse) and Kelly (Brian); and four grandchildren, Nolan, Tyler, Bentley and Ella. She is predeceased by her mother and father, Ella and Michael Smakula.
Dale was born on April 29, 1953, at the Women's Pavilion in Winnipeg. She grew up in a loving home on Hector Bay West and attended Harrow School and Grant Park High School, where she excelled in both academics and athletics. In particular, Dale was an avid speed swimmer who for years competed with the Cardinal Swim Club, breaking national records, qualifying for trials for the Canadian Olympic team, and competing in the first Canada Summer Games in Halifax in 1969.
Following high school, Dale studied education at the University of Manitoba. She later moved to Regina for her first teaching job, returning to Winnipeg in the mid-1970s to raise a family. In the ensuing years, she served as an educational assistant, working with children with special learning needs and teaching English to students who were newcomers to Canada. She often maintained friendships with those students after they'd aged out of her class - a testament to her easy rapport with children, and the impact she had on their lives.
Throughout her own life, Dale had a similar effect on those closest to her. She maintained a busy schedule of extra-curriculars for her kids, cheering them on as they competed in hockey, ringette, soccer and swimming. She instilled in them a love of music - usually played at full volume, whether inside or out - creating new fans of '60s folk, outlaw country and AM gold. Every summer, she ensured they spent weeks at Trout Lake, where they swam, water-skied and fished from dawn to dusk - often in the company of her father, who was every bit as influential.
She hosted holiday parties for friends and relatives, invited neighbourhood kids to backyard birthdays, and served as coach and co-competitor on junior high and rec-league volleyball teams. She was always quick with a corny joke, an offer to babysit or a batch of cookies. (The latter are the stuff of legend in certain Westwood circles.)
For much of her life, she ran three miles a day or skipped rope in her kitchen when weather didn't permit. In her later years, she even rejoined a swim team - returning to her old training ground at Pan Am Pool, just blocks from her childhood home. Instead of retiring, she worked as a lunch supervisor at her children's old schools in Westwood, picking up a new group of friends and colleagues along the way.
When her children became adults, Dale's circle grew to include four grandchildren, of whom she was fiercely proud and devoted to, telling all who'd listen about their accomplishments. Even while battling cancer, she found in them a source of inspiration, and a reason to fight for each day. Her courage and commitment to recovery - in all its forms - will in turn inspire those left to mourn her. She loved deeply, she cherished friends and family, and she will never be forgotten.
Funeral services for Dale will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, March 22, at Wojcik's Funeral Chapel, 1020 Main St.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wheels of Hope, the Canadian Cancer Society's volunteer driving program, at 1.888.939.3333 or cancer.ca/donate.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • Dale was one of a kind! She was my 7th grade teacher at Douglas Park School in Regina, Saskatchewan. Dale really was my favorite teacher!! Beyond the core curriculum, we did so many fun activities that my fellow classmates from another class never got to experience. Dale was my inspiration and she made learning FUN! But the most special gift she gave me was the gift of her lifetime friendship. She left Regina after her first year of teaching and moved to Winnipeg and from then on we stayed in touch and developed a beautiful friendship. God brings people into our lives that touch us in ways we could never have orchestrated. Dale was that gift in my life. To her children, I want you to know how very blessed you were to have Dale as your mother. My heart grieves with you. "A teacher affects eternity; she can never tell where her influence stops. • Dale and I were friends from kindergarten through, university and on…. She had a great mind for academics and sport, both of which she used to enjoy participation in life for herself and her children. If I ever had a question about a childhood memory, she was my go to. She could tell you who sat next to us in grade one and could go down the rows of our grade six class and name everyone. We had regular conversations about sports and family. She was extremely proud of her children and their children. Dale also always asked about my siblings and their kids. She never missed inquiring about the state of my mother’s health. Dale was a born teacher who wanted everyone to be successful. My husband and I were the recipients of many of those famous cookies and muffins over the years as she loved to cook for others. Here’s to Dale for her love of her family and friends. She’ll be missed as the greatest fan for the success of her loved ones. My condolences to her family and friends. - Posted by: Maureen (Hudson) Switzer (Longtime friend) on: Mar 23, 2022

  • So sorry to hear about Dale. We shared the love of the Grant Park Gym where both of us spent so much time. Then years later once we both had young children we shared many an afternoon catching up, having tea, and cookies. She attempted to teach me to bake, and I still have one of her recipes. We had many laughs over my lack of talents in the kitchen, and she would generously pack some goodies up to take home for my boys. Such a wonderful, talented, generous, friendly person she was. I can hear her laughter from here. Condolences to all who loved her. She will be missed. - Posted by: Chris (High school and young Mom friend) on: Mar 22, 2022

  • So very sad to know that Dale has passed on. We spent many years working together, coaching together and just talking together as friends. I remember that weird moment as a teacher when you realize that your teaching assistant is way more intelligent than you are. That's the feeling I had when Dale was in my classroom. She was an invaluable participant in class and I could always count on her to know what I didn't know. Though she could help students in all subjects, Dale had a gift for students who were learning English. She made them laugh, she communicated to them that she understood they were intelligent and she made them feel loved. She shared snacks with them and they endowed her with snacks from their culture which she welcomed and enjoyed wholeheartedly. Dale was the most resourceful person I ever met. Her garden was incredible and I often received the fruits of her labour. One year I even convinced her to grow collard greens with seeds I brought from Georgia. Dale was a gift. I will miss her. • My kids went to same schools as Kelly and Angela and were also fortunate to have Brian as a teacher in high school. Kelly and Garret played community hockey together and is how I got to know Dale. Our condolences for the whole Schmeichel family. My the fond memories you have of your mother/grandmother bring you peace through this difficult time. • I became acquainted with Gail because I had the privilege of teaching her two remarkable sons, David and Michael. Gail set high expectations for herself and also for her children. She was committed to providing for them and for helping them meet their expectations in both the academic and athletic worlds. During the brief time that she provided child care for my daughter, she helped her learn how to skate, ride a bike, and even garden. A bonus of teaching the boys was being a recipient of those famous cookies. Brian was always willing to share until Gail provided an extra for me. Sincere condolences to all of the family, Gina Petty - Posted by: Gina Petty (Friend) on: Mar 19, 2022

  • Dale and I were neighbors and one my best friends (3 of us) from Grade 2 at Harrow through to Grant Park High School Grad. We swam together with the Cardinal Swim Club for many years until Dale moved on to swim with the UofM. She was a very smart caring good friend with awesome parents and brother. We touched base a few times when I came home from Vancouver to visit my parents where she updated me on her family and grandkids. I'm sad to hear of her passing today and would like to send a whole buncha HUGS to all her family. Keep those great memories of her close. - Posted by: Anne Stadnyk (Childhood Friend) on: Mar 19, 2022
