BERNHARD RICHARD FRANK SCHULZKI

Bernhard Richard Frank Schulzki, 62, peacefully left us on March 10, 2022, with his family by his side in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Bernie was born on June 2, 1959 in Medicine Hat to Richard and Rosalinde Schulzki. He grew up in Emo, Ontario, and his upbringing in lake country fostered his love of the outdoors. Bernie was a scholar and woodworker, completing his degrees in education and arts at the University of Manitoba and industrial arts at Red River College. He married his best friend, Brigitte Lachance, on August 28, 1981, and they raised four children in Emo. Bernie was an educator for 31 years. He spent the majority of his career teaching woodworking at Fort Frances High School. He was an avid runner, gardener, and guitarist. After retiring, Bernie and Brigitte moved to Winnipeg to be closer to their children. Family gatherings were of the utmost importance to Bernie, and each visit was filled with joy and laughter. In his spare time, Bernie volunteered his many talents. He faithfully played guitar for mass at St. Timothy Parish. Bernie used his carpentry skills to build houses with Habitat for Humanity around the world. His compassionate nature led him to deliver food for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Bernie would always greet you with a smile and a new joke to share. Bernie spent his life in service of others and his big heart will never be forgotten.
Bernie will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 40 years, Brigitte Schulzki; his children, Danny (Maria), Christine (John), Sonya (Chris), and Richard (Michelle); his grandchildren, James, Charlie, and Taylor; his sister Rose (David Sharp); his mother-in-law Cécile Lachance; and his uncle Peter Thome. He is predeceased by his parents, Richard and Rosalinde Schulzki, and father-in-law André Lachance.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. on March 17, 2022 at St. Timothy Parish, 135 John Forsyth Road, Winnipeg. For those who are unable to attend, the service will be livestreamed at www.st-timothy.ca.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Society of St. Vincent de Paul (St. Timothy Parish chapter), or a charity of your choice.
The family would like to thank the staff at the St. Boniface Hospital Acute Cardiac Care Unit for their compassion and kindness.

  • I am so very sorry to learn about Bernie's passing. It seems so inconceivable. Bernie always seemed to me to be indestructible. He was such a strong person, so capable. He was always generous with his time and his talents. I enjoyed the opportunities we had to chat and commiserate especially when we were stuck in the wilds of Westfort. Later, whenever I pestered him for something for the library, he always responded with a smile and "What can I do for you this time, Mr. Z?" I am so profoundly sad. - Posted by: Rudolf K Zeitlhofer (Friend and colleague) on: Mar 15, 2022

  • Our heartfelt condolences to Brigitte, Danny, Sonya, Richard, Christine and family on the loss of a precious light that displayed love, joy, compassion, gentleness and the proverbial helping hand of God. As a counselor and colleague at FFHS, I truly counted Bernie as one of the Good ones who devoted his patience, skills and genuine caring for each of his students that impacted their lives and endeared himself to the entire staff. Bernie was authentically good natured and positive and very devoted to his family. It was an honour to have known Bernie and I valued his friendship and his selfless acts of service and kindness to all he came into contact with. A few years ago Bernie and I renewed our connection after his retirement and relocation to Winnipeg. About 2.5 years ago I decided the need to build a unique deck and the 1st person that came to mind was of course Bernie. Despite all of his other commitments he quickly came to my rescue and we spent a glorious month constructing a unique deck with material he had never used before. It was a most joyous time for me and my wife and we so looked forward to our challenges, creativity and banter about the most vital aspects surrounding our lives - LOVE of GOD, Family and people in general. Well done good and faithful servant! You will be missed but the memories you have left are eternal and we are so grateful God has allowed us to experience your radiant presence.
