JEAN WINIARZ

It is with the greatest sadness but happiest of memories that we share the peaceful passing of our amazing and beautiful Mom, Jean Winiarz on May 26, 2022, at the age of 99.
Mom was predeceased by her devoted husband Edward in 2005; her parents, Stella and Anthony Dombrowski; and her sister- and brothers-in-law. She is lovingly remembered by her children, Stanis (Maurice), Edward (Maureen), Christine (David) and Teresa (Joseph); her grandchildren, Craig (Heidi), Keith (Kerry), Derek (Kristen), Scott and Shawna (Mike). Dear to her are her 12 great-grandchildren, two great-great grand-children, her nieces and nephews; her cousins, Jean and Jack, as well as her many friends and extended family.
Janina Valentina Dombrowski was born in Nowogrod, Poland on Valentine's Day, 1923. At the age of five, she and her mother travelled to Winnipeg to join her father who had previously arrived to build a new future for the family. They settled in the North End, where Jean graduated from St. John's High School, after which she worked at Chester's Hardware and the Hudson Bay Company. She met the love of her life Edward at the Roseland Dance Hall before he enlisted in the war effort. He was on leave when the war ended and they married on August 18, 1945 at Holy Ghost Church.
Jean and Ed lived in West Kildonan and Garden City. She poured the same loving energy into her home and family as everything else she touched. Jean was the consummate homemaker, her family suppers, Sunday dinners and chocolate chip cookies were legendary. There was always homemade baking available, and everybody in her extended family knew it.
Ed and Jean passionately gave their time to St. Anthony of Padua Church and their entire community. Jean was a proud member of the Catholic Women's League for 58 years, the Canadian Polish Athletic Club and CPAC Seniors, St. John Cantius Seniors, St. Anthony's Leisure Club and a board member of St. Joseph's Residence. She was always available to volunteer wherever help was needed.
Jean loved summers at Sandy Hook, taking up golf and was a founding member of the Sandy Hook Ladies Golf League. Jean and Ed were summer parishioners at Our Lady of the Lake Church in Winnipeg Beach. They travelled to warmer climates during the winter always with their golf clubs.
Jean will be remembered for the smile that lit up the room and her generous and tender heart. She drew great strength from family and friends and cherished these relationships. She is our irreplaceable Mom, our guiding light, our friend and our mentor. She will forever be with us.
Our sincere thanks to the staff and community of Amber Meadow, where Jean spent her last five years enjoying activities with many new friends.
Our family sends sincere thanks to the compassionate and caring medical and support staff at Riverview Health Centre who made Jean's final days so comfortable.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, June 3, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 250 Burrin Ave. with Father Dominic Yuen celebrant. Interment will follow at Holy Ghost Cemetery. For those who choose, viewing will be one half hour prior Mass.
In lieu of flowers, if so desired, a donation may be made in Jean's name to a charity of one's choice.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Growing up we lived 2 houses from the Winiarz. My first memory of the family was when Chris and Terry would babysit my brother Michael and I. My parents had a wonderful relationship with Ed and Jean, whether they were golfing as a foursome, hanging out with the other neighbors on Arrowwood or playing cards. Mrs. Winiarz was such a special lady and a great friend to my mom. They had many lunches together and many golfing days with the Ladies group. May your memories comfort you at this difficult time. RIP Jean!! Laura Melnyk-Medven - Posted by: Laura Melnyk Medven (Garden City neighbour) on: May 31, 2022

  • The best things in life can last a life time and for ever after is shared with my friends, parents and companions and so much love and blessings. I am the youngest who had privilege to have a life thanks to and I am spoiled to have you not let go and I with God's love I can be with My Mom and Dad in heaven, in Jesus name and approval! Please enough rain! Sunshine is what we need! Amen! - Posted by: Teresa Winiarz (Youngest Daughter of Ed and Jean ) on: May 31, 2022
