It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of Catherine MacLucas MacNaught, aged 87 years, on Sunday, June 12, 2022, following a brief illness.
Mum leaves to cherish her memory her four girls, sons-in-law, and grandchildren: Christine and Jack (Cody, Fiona, Alasdair, and Morag), Barbara and Philip (Colin and Sara, Kenneth, Gillian, and Emily), Marion (Callum), Fiona and Joe, and her dear sister Marion in Scotland along with many nieces and nephews.
Mum was predeceased by her beloved husband Kenny. Mum and Dad were happily married for 34 years before Dad's passing in 1989, her love for him continued. Mum was also predeceased by her parents, Christina and Angus, her brother John and sister-in-law Alice, and brother-in-law George.
Mum was born in Ballachulish, Argyllshire, Scotland, the youngest of a family of three. In her teens she met her future husband, who came from the neighbouring village of Kinlochleven. Mum enjoyed school and did well. She had a love of languages and grammar, and an aptitude for figures. She furthered her schooling in Glasgow by becoming a comptometer operator and then worked at the British Aluminium Factory.
Mum immigrated to Canada in 1955. She came across the Atlantic Ocean on the Queen Mary at the age of 20 to marry Dad, who immigrated a year ahead. Mum kept a close relationship with family in Scotland despite being separated by many miles. She worked at Canadian National Railway for five years until she became a mother. Mum and Dad settled in East Kildonan where they built their home and raised their family. After 20 years at home, she re-entered the workforce. She enjoyed working at Canada Safeway's head office until her retirement in 1994.
Mum loved being with her family, whether going to church, dining out, hosting family dinners, getting together at each other's homes, being at the lake or travelling. As a family we had many trips home to Scotland as well as across Canada and the United States. Mum and Dad had a special trip to Mexico that they had won, Mum visited New Zealand, and enjoyed a European cruise with her sister Marion. We have so many happy memories of a cruise to Hawaii and of Mum taking our entire family on a Caribbean cruise.
Mum loved spending time sitting outside in the backyard, she took great pleasure in gardening and growing flowers and vegetables from seed. Mum had a quiet nature and was a lady of few words. She was strong, independent, loyal, happy, and content. Mum was a perfect mother. Every day she made delicious home-cooked nourishing meals, she kept an immaculate home, and was the definition of love. She was encouraging, accepting, supportive, and always on our side. Mum joyfully attended countless school concerts and graduations, piano and violin recitals, and sporting events. We are grateful that the grandchildren experienced the same deep love from their Granny.
A memorial service will be held at St. John's Presbyterian Church, 251 Bannerman Avenue, Monday, July 18, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Kevin MacDonald will officiate.
