JAMES BARRY ROWLEY

It is with great sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Barry on September 6, 2022, at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital at the age of 88 years.
Barry was predeceased by his wife Darleen (Jorginson), son Wayne, parents, Duncan and Violet (Bruce), and brother Clayton.
Barry will be lovingly remembered and cherished by his devoted partner Fran Coulter; children, Wendy Harrison (Ian), Colleen Tanaka (Lester); grandchildren, Mark, Amy, Luke, Dayna, and Alec; sister Shirley Wilkowich, brother Calvin; sister-in-law Theda and Russell Skalesky; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Barry was born September 24, 1933 in East Selkirk, Manitoba, where he grew up. Barry excelled at baseball, hockey, and track and field and was inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005. He proudly graduated from the University of Manitoba with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1958.
Barry and Darleen married on January 3, 1959. They shared fond memories of living in St. Catharines, ON, The Pas, and Birtle, MB, before settling in Winnipeg. They were blessed with 47 wonderful years together, raising their family, building their cottage, travelling, and cherishing their grandchildren.
Following Darleen's passing, Barry found love again with Fran. They enjoyed 16 years of adventure together, travelling, and delighting in their family and friends. Barry so appreciated Fran's cooking and sharing his knowledge about sports with her. She was his trusty creative assistant.
Barry worked as the Director of Maintenance Management for the Department of Highways and Transportation. He served as a dedicated Rotarian for decades.
Barry's passions were sports and woodworking. An athlete himself, he coached his children's teams, joyfully cheered on his grandchildren, and supported Winnipeg sports teams with season tickets at various times. Barry spent countless hours in the garage on his scroll saw. He gave of himself through his creations and his beautiful works are in homes around the world.
A generous soul, witty to the end, Barry always put his family first. He marvelled at the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. We were all blessed to love him and be loved by him in return. Barry will be greatly missed and forever cherished.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Westwood Presbyterian Church, 197 Browning Blvd., Winnipeg, MB.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rotary Club of Winnipeg Assiniboine Charitable Foundation Inc. or a charity of your choice.

  • I was shocked to learn of Barry's passing. I had a great conversation with him less than two months ago and he was the same as the over 60 years I have known him. we had a great conversation reminiscing Maintenance Management where I reported to him for many years. He was a wise and nurturing manager. He had great positive influence on my life and career as a role model. Farewell Barry Thank you for many years of friendship. My best wishes to his loved ones. He was a "stand up" guy!! Sincerely, Jack Gillespie. - Posted by: Jack Gillespie (Friend and co-worker) on: Sep 12, 2022
