KATHERINE (KATE) STEPHENS

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Katherine (Kate) Stephens on Tuesday November 1, 2022 at the Grace Hospital with her sister and her niece by her side.
Kate leaves behind, her sister Carol Stephens, her nephews, James (Kathleen), Jeremy (Paula), her nieces Taylor (Kevin), Alex (Shane) and her great-nieces and nephews, Danielle, Meaghan, Ben, Emma and Brenley.
She was predeceased by her beloved partner, Peter Campbell and her sister Susan Jackson.
Kate was born in Winnipeg in 1943 and at the age of 16 she and her family moved to London England where she continued her education. She was bitten by the travel bug early in life, which took her to places like Afghanistan and India, before embarking as an entrepreneur in Winnipeg with her interior design studio and as a manufacturer's agent.
Her lifelong love of horses led her to eventually owning East Gate Farm, a horse boarding facility near Bird's Hill Park. Part of the charm was her Caboose House, where those from the horse community would gather over coffee and sweets. She was a mentor to countless young horse lovers and her hose rolling technique is still being used by many.
A piece of her heart will always be at the cottage at Stephenson's Point where she spent happy summers with Carol and in Mesa, AZ wintering and travelling with Peter.
Kate was generous, strong, and incredibly kind. Her strength and independence was in everything she touched, and she will live on in the hearts and minds of everyone who loved her.
Please join us Saturday November 19th, 2022, at 1pm to 3:30pm at Rae and Jerry's, 1405 Portage Ave to share stories about Kate.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lake Winnipeg Foundation at lakewinnipegfoundation.org

  • Hi Carol My condolences to you and your family. I worked with Kate for many years and I loved spending time with her. She always had lots of energy and was fun to be with. We were sad when she retired to the farm but we knew how much she loved her life outside of work. We only just heard of Kate's passing so apologies for not acknowledging until now. The hearts of everyone at Keilhauer are with you and Kate will always be in our memories. Mike - Posted by: Mike Keilhauer (Friend ) on: Nov 21, 2022

  • Kate was a special gal to Dean and Brenda Fetterly and Drew at East Gate Farms. We shared many stories and experiences together as Dean worked in her barn shoeing horses, doing jobs around the property, while living right next door to her famous caboose which was her very cool home. We will never forget Christmas in July around the pool, complete with Santa and laughs and great fun, many friends always gathering there. Kate hosted our wedding on her property in 1990, and thanks to her generosity we were able to enjoy her beautiful grounds and had the perfect setting for the happiest day of our lives. Kate played a huge part in our getting 'started' in our marriage by providing a safe haven and support while we started our life together. We had many barbeques and saw many sunsets together during our stay at East Gate Farms and we will never forget what a pivitol role she played in our lives. She was an animal lover and nothing meant more to her than her dogs Quinn and her magnificent german sheperd, many cats and her devotion to her horses. We will never forget the day there was a major wind storm and while Kate was out, a squirrel managed to get into the caboose and trash her lovely home. Someone left a window open and that squirrel had a hay day. Kate was a friend to us and we have so many happy memories of her and her friends and family we were so fortunate to know. We remember movies nights with Taylor, complete with buttered popcorn, and many good times while hanging around the barn with the boarders. Thank you Kate for all you have done. You were one in a million. Rest in peace DEAR DEAR KATE! - Posted by: Dean Fetterly (Friend) on: Nov 12, 2022
