RONALD GARFIELD MCKECHNEY
1936 - 2023


Ron was born on July 27, 1936 in Bienfait, Saskatchewan to Inez and Garfield McKechney. He passed away February 25, 2023 at Health Science Centre in Winnipeg.
A retired educator, Ron taught all levels of education, from elementary school in Estevan and Sagkeeng First Nation to the university level at University of Minnesota and Lakehead University in Thunder Bay. Ron graduated from Bemidji State University with a BSc. and received his Masters and PhD. from the University of Minnesota.
While attending Bemidji State University Ron was instrumental in reinstituting the hockey program after an absence of the sport for several years. He was inducted into the Bemidji State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988. Ron also played and coached in the South Saskatchewan Baseball League in Estevan and Swift Current for many years and was a member of the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame. Coaching and playing sports was a big part of his life.
Ron was predeceased by his parents; two sisters, Kay Enmark and Lynne Dahl and their spouses; sister-in-law Bev McKechney; niece Lori and nephew Tim.
He is survived by his wife Peg; sons, Garnet, Bill (Louise) and Craig (Cindy); and his brother Gary. Also, four granddaughters; Ashlin, Jillian, Emma and Kaitlyn; and great-granddaughter Hudson.
Cremation has taken place and no funeral services will be held.
