GWENDOLYN (WENDY) SERSUN
(nee RUPPENTHAL)
November 19, 1942 February 24, 2023
It is with deep sadness we announce the sudden passing of Wendy Sersun. She leaves to mourn her loving husband Michael; her daughters Pamela (Dwayne); and Leanne; grandson Dominic; and brother-in-law Bill.
She is also mourned by her niece, nephews, and their families: Sandy (Rob) Katrynuik; Keith (Maggie) Ruppenthal; and Gavin (Tara) Ruppenthal.
Wendy was born in Winnipeg to Arthur and Rose (Willis) Ruppenthal. She was joined four years later by her brother, Charles. Her family was a tight-knit Polish-Ukrainian household and included a large and loving extended family. She had many fond memories of spending time visiting her grandparents, uncles and aunts, and cousins and spending time at Ingolf.
Michael and Wendy met in 1963 thanks to the matchmaking efforts of Rose. It didn't take long, and they were an item. Wendy completed her nursing training at the Winnipeg General Hospital School of Nursing, graduating with her RN as part of the class of 1964A. They were engaged soon after and married in September 1965.
Wendy and Michael first lived on Stradbrook Avenue as they pursued their careers. In 1968 they purchased their first home on Slater Avenue. In 1969 they were joined by their daughter Pamela, and Leanne followed three years later to complete their family.
Wendy spent much of her daughters' childhood as a stay-at-home mom, keeping her and her daughters' days enriched with her love of swimming, crafts, sewing, baking and activities the girls loved. She returned to nursing once the girls reached junior high. Wendy was a wonderful and caring nurse and made many wonderful friends during her time with the VON and later the visiting nurses program of the WRHA.
An avid and enthusiastic gardener, Wendy's care of their garden on Appleton Street where they moved in 1985 was evident. Wendy took her time to a do a job well. She also enjoyed cooking, baking and was a keen crafter including scrapbooking, needle point, sewing and quilting. Wendy had a love to travel and journeyed with Michael to Portugal, Costa Rica, Alaska and many parts of Canada and US with family.
Wendy had a loving and generous heart for family, friends and neighbours. She kept up with her classmates even up until recently. She always had a special place for animals of all sizes, especially dogs. She loved taking her girls for their walks, swims, and snuggling-up with them at night.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at E.J. Coutu Funeral Home, 680 Archibald Street. A private family interment will follow at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in Wendy's memory to an animal rescue or shelter of your choice.
