(nee HICKSON)
It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of our dear wife, mother, grandmother (nana), and sister in Hazel Ann Hanuschak (Hickson) on March 7, 2023, at the age of 86. Hazel was born in London, England, July 17, 1936, and passed away peacefully with her family by her side at St. Boniface Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Predeceased by parents Bernhard James Hickson and Alice Margaret Hickson (Underhill) and brothers Barry James and Phillip Arnold. Will be deeply missed and cherished by husband Bill (William), sons Clive, Paul, and Blair (granddaughters Alyssa and Hannah); her brother Clive and wife June Hickson (niece Sharon and nephew Ian) and many other relatives and friends.
Hazel was born in London in 1936 and was an outstanding athlete in her school days. While working in London in advertising, Hazel met her husband Bill in 1960, while he was working in London and completing his graduate studies at the University of Birmingham. They married in Pettswood, Kent on October 28, 1961, and enjoyed a romantic three-week tour of Europe for their honeymoon.
In October 1962, Hazel and Bill and their red Volkswagen sailed on the SS Carinthia to Montreal. They then drove to Winnipeg where they started their journey together in Canada. In 1974, they moved to Springfield and lived in and around Oakbank, and eventually settled in Sunnyside, Manitoba, in 1992, where they lived for the past 30 years.
Hazel was a devoted wife and mother who focused her love and attention on raising her three sons. She later became involved with founding and operating a daycare/kindergarten in Oakbank, and worked at Middlechurch Nursing Home, and Ludwick's Catering.
Hazel loved to travel and enjoyed many vacations with Bill and with the family. She especially enjoyed trips to warmer climates, and loved to visit her granddaughters in Florida, Georgia, and Virginia over the years.
Hazel loved all animals, and was happiest when surrounded by cats, dogs, birds, and deer in her back yard. She also loved everything about the beach - the ocean, sand, and seashells, and savored the sunsets.
A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held later this spring at Seasons Funeral Chapel in Oakbank, MB with details to follow.

Dear Bill and family. Glen and I are so sorry to hear of Hazel’s passing. We remember fondly being “neighbors” and spending many fun times together. We always admired Hazel for her devotion to animals, never wanting to see any animal suffer. She had a kind heart. So very glad to have spent a nice afternoon visiting with you both last summer. So sorry to hear of Hazel's passing. We had many great times as friends attending socials, parties, etc. Hazel certainly was an animal lover, and when I moved to British Columbia to be with my family, she gave Andy, my little dog, a warm and loving home.
