BRUCE WILLIAM KONDRATUK
It is th great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Bruce Kondratuk, on March 13, 2023, at his home with his wife Beth, three children, Tammy, David and Dana, and dog Scruffy at his side. Bruce's sister Juanita, extended family, friends, and beloved grandchildren were able to say their good-byes.
Bruce was an adventurous free spirit who lived life full-on and on his own terms. He loved nature - lakes and forests - and had a soft heart for animals. He loved to design and build and had a rare aptitude for doing so.
Bruce was born to Leda and Steve Kondratuk in September 1942, near Plumas, Manitoba. He was the third of four children and had one brother, Leon, and two sisters, Ann and Juanita. After residing in Gladstone, the family moved to Seven Sisters Falls and then to Otter Falls, where the family started a tourist resort. Bruce attended several schools due to the remoteness of his home at Otter Falls. He spent his summers helping his family build and run the resort. Bruce, along with his siblings, worked hard and had innumerable fun-filled adventures at Otter Falls, where Bruce also became an expert water skier and scuba diver. In his late teens, Bruce built his first cabin at Otter Falls, with lumber he received in exchange for logging work at Dorothy Lake.
Bruce met Lisbeth (Beth) Jeanette Ball in 1967 and they married in Birtle, Manitoba in 1970. After Bruce and Beth got married, Bruce attended the University of Manitoba for four years where he earned his Engineering degree. Tammy, his first child was able to attend his graduation as a newborn. After graduation they moved to Jenpeg, Manitoba, where Bruce worked as an engineer on the construction of the hydro dam and Beth worked at the busy nursing station. David and Dana were born while they lived in Jenpeg. Bruce built his second cottage on Setting Lake and the family had many great adventures with close friends boating in the summers and snowmobiling in the winters. While in Jenpeg, Bruce also volunteered for dangerous work as a rescue diver for the R.C.M.P.
The family moved back to Winnipeg in 1979, where Bruce worked as an Engineer for the Federal Government. Later Bruce started his own engineering firm which he operated for many years. In more recent years, Bruce finished building his third cottage located at Driftwood Beach, on Lake Winnipeg. Bruce built this cottage for his wife, children and grandchildren to enjoy and gather, and we have had many special times there. Bruce's grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Pa", have grown up with happy memories of playing on the beach, swimming, hiking and campfires with their grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles, and friends.
We love you, Pa, and will miss you always. We will think of you when we look out over the water at the sunset.
Bruce was predeceased by his brother, Leon in 1957; his father, Steve Kondratuk in 2003; his mother, Leda (Belton) Kondratuk in 2006 and his sister, Ann (Kondratuk) Henschel in 2019.
He is survived by his wife, Lisbeth (Beth Ball) Kondratuk; his children, Tammy Kondratuk, David (Lesley) Kondratuk and Dana (Peter) Stam; his grandchildren, Tristyn Stam, Mya Stam, Cloey Stam, Olivia Kondratuk, Kenzie Kondratuk; step-grandchildren, Austyn and Avery Stam; his sister, Juanita (Jerry) Cousins; and his brothers-in-law, Gordon Henschel, Jerry Cousins and Tom Ball, along with very close family friends, Mahmud (Chesster) Hassain and Gilbert Barber.
A service to celebrate Bruce's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 17 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave.
If desired, in lieu of flowers donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba.
