MARTHA WIEBE
(nee WIENS)

February 13, 1932 - March 12, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Oma, Gross-Oma, Aunt and Friend. Martha Wiebe (nee Wiens) who passed away on March 12 at the age of 91 at Riverview Palliative Care.
Martha leaves to mourn her children, Corinne (Barry), Eleanor (Pete), Randy (Gerrie); daughter-in-law Ingrid; her grandchildren, Amber, Nathan (Kyla), Andrew (Kirsten), Bryanne (Joel), Carlee, Casey and Ezra; great-grandchildren, Elliot, Zoey, Lachlan, Miles, Wilder and Ryan; sister Hertha, plus nieces, nephews and friends.
Martha was predeceased by parents, Elizabeth and Abram Wiens, husband Jake, son Reg, grandson Kyle, brother Rudy, sisters, Mika and Irma.
Martha had various careers, activities and volunteer interests that she enjoyed and excelled at throughout her life. She graduated as an LPN and worked in various hospitals. She left nursing to raise her family. She was a swim instructor and lifeguard with St. James YMCA and City of Winnipeg. As a deacon of the First Mennonite Church she saw that seniors didn't have adequate nutritious meals so she and her friend Mary Klassen started serving meals from the church basement. That vision led her to developing the first meal program in Winnipeg with funding from the NDP government. She developed and managed meal programs at Sunset House, Arlingtonhaus, Autumn House and Red River Manor in Selkirk. She also co-owned a Stonewall restaurant/service station with her son Reg.
Her favourite place to be in the summer was at the family cottage in Minaki. She loved spending time there with family, picking blueberries, swimming, fishing, boating, getting back to the basics of cooking with a wood stove and living off the grid.
Funeral service will be held Monday, March 20, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at First Mennonite Church, 922 Notre Dame Ave., Winnipeg. Viewing prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Martha's memory may be made to the First Mennonite Church.
Livestream will be available at https://firstmennonitechurch.ca/services/

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I always remembered Martha's friendly, easy-going nature. She was a great volunteer, always wanting to help without looking for recognition. I remember all the hard work she and my mom put in for the meal program they started. She will be greatly missed. Prayers for peace and comfort to Cori, Eleanor, Randy and their families. - Posted by: Paul Klassen (Family Friend) on: Mar 20, 2023

  • My deepest condolences to you all of the passing of your dear Oma, mother, aunt ...May she Rest in Peace🙏 - Posted by: Eva Rey Fuerst (Aunt to Joel & Bryanne ) on: Mar 18, 2023

  • I always enjoy the almost weekly life stories of Oma. When we talk of Oma, it’s never, ‘Is YOUR Oma at the cabin this week?’, ‘Is YOUR Oma still driving the boat?!’ It was always ‘Is Oma…., How’s Oma?’ She was Oma to so many more people than she ever knew! She was shared with us, and with so many patients sitting in our chair. Forever inspired by, and so deeply missed. - Posted by: Lindsey Verret (Coworker of Bryanne) on: Mar 18, 2023
