MICHAEL CHAIKOSKI

Michael Chaikoski, 98, of Winnipeg Manitoba, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2023 with his family by his side at Deer Lodge Centre.
Michael was born on January 25, 1925 to Harry and Pauline Chaykowski in Czabarowka, Kopyczyne, Poland. Settling first in Garson, then Selkirk. As a youth, Michael enjoyed playing hockey with his friends on the road with frozen horse 'pucks' as well as swimming in the Tyndall stone quarry. In 1943, he volunteered for the Canadian Navy along with his youthful buddies in Selkirk. He was honourably discharged in 1945, and met the love of his life, Minnie, at his auntie's home. They were married in 1946. They had four children, Joy (Keith), Robert (Angie), Lynn, and Doug.
Michael is survived by his wife, Minnie and his sister, Jenny Witwicki. He also had seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Many of the family have passed away, including son-in-law, Harold Lessard, daughter-in-law, Sharon Chaikoski; brothers-in-law: Edward Nichols, Garnet Kyle, Stanley Witwicki; sisters-in-law: Laurie Nichols, and Cecelia Kyle.
Michael made many friends throughout his life; through his work at Deer Lodge Veterans Hospital, now Deer Lodge Centre, through refereeing hockey for 19 years at the Winnipeg Minor Hockey Association, and in the woodworking community at the Armed Forces Wood Shop, 17 Wing, (since renamed Mel Flake's Wood Hobby Club in honour of longtime friend, Melbourn Flake). Michael and his wife, Minnie, were avid volunteers for the horticultural society, Roblin Park Community Center, Charleswood Community Centre, White Ensign Club and The Red River Exhibition. Michael and Minnie also recently celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary. In Charleswood, a street was named 'Chaikoski Court' in recognition of the long residence and volunteerism in the Community. Michael was a generous man, who has supported many charities including: Deer Lodge Centre Foundation, War Amps, Legion, Cancer Research, The Children's Hospital, The Alzheimer's Foundation, and many others.
The family would like to offer a special thank you to the staff at Deer Lodge Centre Tower 5, St. Boniface Hospital, and Cancer Care Manitoba.
No flowers please, there will be no service at this time. The family has planned a reception for later in the year; details will follow.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • My sympathy to Mike’s family. I worked at Deer Lodge for many years beginning in 1969. Mike was always ready to help with whatever the nursing staff needed and his presence there was missed when he retired. Rest peacefully Mike. - Posted by: Edith Stephenson (Deer Lodge Coworker ) on: Apr 03, 2023

  • Hello Mike Hello Minnie Please accept our deepest sympathies from Calgary; where we moved in 2001. We miss our memories of 41 years in Charleswood; which includes the many meetings for the CHS in your home. Always a pleasure Minnie; including the plant tours of your kitchen and living room. Inevitably Mike and I would reminisce about our refereeing hockey games; always big laughs there! Take care Minnie; forwarding with Love at this sad time! Shirley and John Humble - Posted by: John. Humble (Old Hockey Friend ) on: Mar 20, 2023
