JOYCE MARQUETTE

Surrounded by the love of her family, Joyce passed away peacefully, March 9, 2023 at the age of 81, after a very recent and unexpected diagnosis in February, of stage four cancer, which has left us heartbroken.
Joyce was born in Arbakka, a small farming community in S.E. Manitoba, to Doris and Steve Kostynyk. She is predeceased by her parents; only sibling Gerald; brothers-in-law, Herman and Gus.
Left to cherish her memory, her husband of almost 61 years, Joe; daughter Lori; sons, Daryl (Alanna), Randy (Suzanne); grandson Austin Lavallee (Payton), and their extended families; nephew Chad; sister-in law Kay; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and their extended families; sisters-in-law, Mary (Frank), Yvonne, Betty, brother-in-law Alex (Rolande), and their extended families. Joyce shared a very special bond with her aunt Kathleen Nastiuk, who will be missing her dearly. She will always be remembered as "Gramma Joyce", to Macara, Mattea, Alex, Abel, and granddog Tanner.
In Joyce's younger years, she attended Shevchenko School in Vita, MB and in 1959, moved to the city to live with her aunt Kathleen. Her first job was as a nanny in River Heights, shortly after that, she went on to work in the office at The Grain Exchange. It was 1960, when the very stylish farm girl, met the very cool athletic, small-town baseball player from Woodridge, MB at a ball game in Vita. The rest, as they say, is history. Married in 1962, it was very soon after, a family was started.
In the mid 1970s Joyce worked as a secretary in the office at Windsor Park Collegiate, and later at Westwood Collegiate in the late 70s. When the children were teenagers, Joyce joined her husband, to begin a very risky but entrepreneurial journey of self-employment, as listing agents of pre-owned Manufactured Homes. The business operated out of their dining room, with a desk, corkboard, telephone and Polaroid camera. This paved the way for the family owned and operated business in Headingley, with all three children involved, and ran successfully, for 37 years until retirement in 2017. With her kind and gentle demeanor, Joyce treated all of her customers like family, and won many top sales awards in the 1980s and '90s. Family was everything to Joyce, and she was happiest having her family by her side. She enjoyed her workplace, where family and friends would gather frequently for special occasions, or just stop in to say hello. Joyce now had more time to enjoy cooking her mother's traditional Ukrainian dishes such as cabbage rolls, perogies, meat buns, and borscht, for all to enjoy, just as her mom did. This became her passion and she continued to cook these dishes until December when she became ill.
Our family wishes to express gratitude to the doctors,, nurses and support staff at Grace Hospital for their outstanding care, compassion, and kindness to Joyce and our family during this very difficult time.
In accordance with Joyce's wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life and private interment of ashes will take place in May.

  • We were neighbours of Joe and Joyce when they lived on Mackie Bay. She was the kindest person. She once drove my sister to the hospital when she dropped her baby daughter and stayed with her until they found out everything was OK. Jim worked for them part time at the trailer sales and we kept in contact until we moved out of the city. Our condolences to Lori, Daryl and Randy and of course to Joe. • It breaks our hearts to write this note to Joey, her children and grandchildren. She was a bright light in our lives and loved by everyone. ..She was an amazing mother to her children and a loving wife to Joey. There is no greater love than the love of a mother for her children and they felt her love every day.I was their bridesmaid when they made their vows to each other and their love lasted till the day she was called to Heaven. Knowing that we will never see her face or hear her voice leaves a big hole in our hearts..but it gives us comfort to know she is at peace and not suffering anymore. She is with Jesus and his angels and her loved ones who are no longer with us.Heaven has been blessed by another very special angel called Joyce.Rest in peace our precious little angel.God bless you and your loved ones.Gone but not forgotten.
