CAROL HAWN

Carol Hawn passed away peacefully on March 18, 2023.
She will be lovingly missed by her husband of 53 years, Chris, son Matthew and daughter Karen (Tomas, Tilda and Emily).
Born on December 17, 1944, she was the only child of her late parents, Jim and Florence Affleck.
Carol was proud of her East Fort Garry roots. Her grandfather came to Winnipeg from Rothesay, Scotland in 1910, and set up a blacksmith shop at the corner of Pembina and Clarence. She grew up in the neighbourhood at her parents' motel along the Red River.
She graduated from St. John's College (U of M), and became a French teacher. She first taught at Grant Park High School, where she met Chris. While raising their children she worked part-time supporting various students in south Winnipeg. Later, she worked at Ramah School and continued on at the Shore School where she enjoyed teaching until her retirement.
Carol enjoyed the company of good friends and family, former colleagues and special neighbours, a tea or coffee on the deck, a chance meeting while out walking the dog, a game of cards or dominoes with her best friend Barbara Pirie and husband Donn.
A good book, a greenhouse or a fabric store brought her happiness. Family trips to the mountains, West coast and Sweden were fond memories.
The family wishes to thank the staff at CancerCare, for their help and kindness. A very special thank you to the staff on the 4th floor at the Victoria Hospital. You should all be very proud of the work you do.
Thank you to Dr. R. Hayward (retired) and to Dr. B. Goldenberg, Carol's former student, for your guidance and good care.
A private service and interment will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to CancerCare Manitoba, the Winnipeg Humane Society, or a local organization of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • So very sorry to hear of Carol's passing. My sympathies and prayers to her family. Our parents were the closest friends and they always visited back and forth when we were kids. I was 3 years younger than Carol but we always played together while our parents indulged in a card game. Upon marrying, I relocated, and lost touch after my Mum passed. Carol was a lovely person, again condolescences. Anne - Posted by: Anne Robson-Shannon (Old acquaintance thru our parents) on: Apr 16, 2023

  • My deepest condolences to the family. Mme Hawn was a great teacher, and I will remember her fondly. - Posted by: Alissa miller (Student) on: Mar 29, 2023

  • Mrs. Carol Hawn was my home room and French teacher for junior high at Grant Park High School. She was the most decent, kind and talented teacher I had while in junior and high school. I even got an award for academic achievement one year and I believe it was because I was motivated by Mrs. Hawn's superb teaching skills. I often thought about her through the years and I am saddened to hear of her passing. My sincerest condolences to her family. A truly wonderful teacher and person. - Posted by: Michelle (Student) on: Mar 27, 2023

  • Carol was a colleague of mine at Ramah and Gray Academy. A gentle, pleasant woman Carol was easy to get along with and had a kind word for all. I enjoyed working with Carol. RIP - Posted by: Mara barsky (Colleague) on: Mar 26, 2023

  • I had Mrs. Hawn as my french teacher for grades 8, 9, and 10 at Grant Park. She was one of my favorite teachers. When I first arrived at Grant Park for gr. 8 I had not taken any french classes previously and my first class with Miss Affleck was a French test and only my name appeared on the page. I got my nerve up to go up and hand in my paper to her explaining my situation. She smiled at me and took my test paper and set it aside. By the end of the school year, French was my Best subject and continued to be until I left the school in grade 10. I remember her fondly and am truly sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Heather Lightfoot (former student) on: Mar 25, 2023
