SAVERIA MARRA
June 30, 1924 – March 27, 2023

On Monday March 27, 2023, our beloved aunt Saveria Marra at the age of 98, was gathered up to her people: her father Giuseppe Marra, her mother Maria Rosa Mancina, her nine siblings who failed to breathe their first breath, her sister Maria Marra Paletta to whom she devoted her life and her brother-in-law Antonio Paletta.
Saveria was born in San Giovanni in Fiore, Italy on June 30, 1924. For nine years she cared for five nieces and nephews in Italy while her sister joined her husband in Winnipeg, Canada to work and secure a future for their family.
On December 6, 1965 she joined her sister, brother-in-law and a new niece and nephew in Canada. Saveria loved this country and never looked back on her decision to immigrate. For 25 years she worked in the housekeeping department of the Health Sciences Centre - at the time known as the Winnipeg General Hospital. After her arrival to Canada and even while working full time, she continued to be a vital part of the family looking after the needs of everyone in the big and busy Paletta household.
Saveria is survived by many nieces and nephews: Rosa Ciresi (Salvatore), Salvatore Paletta (Isabella), Giuseppe Paletta (Maria), Anna Paletta Zurzolo (Salvatore), Francesca Paletta, Saveria Paletta (Carmelo), Silvano Paletta (Louise). As well as numerous grandnieces and grandnephews: Rosemary and Rosario Ciresi, Maria, Costanza and Joseph Paletta, Anthony and Angelo Paletta, Cara and Samuel Zurzolo, Adrianna Militano and Antonio Paletta. Also many great-grandnieces and grandnephews: Antonio and Giuliana Cappellano, Sam and Vincent Ciresi, Nicolas and Isabella Correia, Sofia, Chiara and Amelia Torchia, Amore and Monet Paletta, Tiana, Esme and Joah Paletta, Olivia Zurzolo Kaban, Brielle, Miree and Novalee Maguet, Elijah, Eva and Eliana Zurzolo.
Saveria was a formidable woman who personified courage and strength. She was a founding member of the Italian Evangelical Church in Winnipeg now known as Oasis Community Church. She devoted her resources to the poor and the needy, the stranger and the disenfranchised.
On Wednesday, April 5, funeral services will be held at Oasis Community Church on Elmhurst Street at 11:00 a.m. Family will be receiving condolences at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association.
Pallbearers are Gilles Maguet, Joe Cappellano, Edgar Correia, Rosario Ciresi, Samuel Zurzolo, Joe Torchia, Joseph Paletta and Anthony Paletta, Angelo Paletta and Antonio Paletta.
The family is grateful to Dr. Samuel Smal and Morgan at Pembina Clinic for their loving care. The Palliative Care Team and her caregivers Tanya, Tetiana, Ruta, and Rut.
