IVAN SIDNEY ABOLIT

Ivan Sidney Abolit, 81, passed peacefully on April 7, 2023.

Ivan is survived by his daughters, Denine (David) and Lia (Chris). His wife Janice passed in 2015.

Born January 6, 1942 in Orillia, ON to Dennis and Helen (Hart) Abolit. He married Janice Zynger May 4, 1968 in Victoria, BC. In keeping with several generations of military service, Ivan served in the Royal Canadian Air Force and Canadian Forces as an airman and commissioned officer from 1960 to 1997. Ivan also served briefly in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1965. He was an air traffic controller, a nuclear biological and chemical defence specialist with NORAD and a training officer with the Air Reserves. He was stationed in Canada, the United States, and Germany.

Ivan was known for his love of people, music, cars, aviation, and seafood. He never passed up a chance for lobster. He met Jan, the love of his life, on Long Beach on Vancouver Island. Ivan’s quirky sense of humour and big smile were legendary, as was his love of Canada’s North. He had fond memories of growing up in the Yukon and the Northwest Territories, as well as the family home on Salt Spring Island, BC. He was devoted to his wife and family, supporting all their interests and activities.

A Celebration of Life gathering is to be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Charleswood Branch 100, at 6003 Robin Blvd. on April 20, 2023 from 3:00 p.m. onwards.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I am saddened to hear of Ivan's passing. We first met in 1961 as young developing Air Traffic Controllers. Over the years we crossed paths many times, the last time was in Winnipeg at the end of our careers in the Military. Ivan never forgot our roots and every so often would send a message or condolence when I was grieving. I shall miss my old friend and think of him and his family during these sad times. Rest in Peace Ivan, you will be remembered. - Posted by: Les Al-Molky (Friend & Colleague) on: Apr 19, 2023

  • I first met Ivan about 20+ years ago at a meeting of the Old Farts club at the ANAVETS in St. James.. He was the organiser and brought a lot of us together over this period, filled with lots of serious and amusing conversations. We are all going to miss him, Thanks to him for being there and caring. My sincere Condolences to the family, He will be remembered for his friendliness and sincerity. He was a true Gentleman... - Posted by: Michael Hickey (A Friend ) on: Apr 18, 2023

  • So very sorry to hear of the passing of your dad! I have many memories of him and your mom! Thinking about Denise and Lia at this sad time! - Posted by: Brenda Zynger (Brotherinlaw) on: Apr 18, 2023

  • Ivan and I met while training together at CFB Borden. As I recall, Ivan was our course honour student and was always at the top of his game, focused and a real team player. We never had a chance to serve together after that but I have never forgotten him and his commitment to the RCAF and the air traffic controllers. RIP Ivan. - Posted by: Michael Morin OMM CD Colonel ( RCAF Retired) (Colleague ) on: Apr 15, 2023
