Gord was a part of my childhood. Watching him and my dad Roy Hilton curling was a highlight. Many curling get togethers. At Sandy Hook he took the time to give us survival lessons. A few years back, he had some curling pictures framed for me from the Victoria curling club when it shut down. Always a glass act. Rest easy. - Posted by: sheila marie Babineau(Hilton) (family friend) on: Apr 29, 2023

I am deeply saddened to learn of Mr Menzie's passing. He was my gr 7-9 math teacher at General Byn School. He was such a gentle soul. I later ran into him at my work in the last 10ish years..we always had great chats about his former students, and my classmates. His memory was solid...to remember our names after being away from school for over 40 years. To hear he had Alzheimers breaks my heart. He will be missed!! - Posted by: Kristen Reimer (Houska) (Former student) on: Apr 18, 2023

I was shocked and saddened to hear the news of Mr. Menzies passing. I knew Mr. Menzies from General Byng school where he was my home room teacher and my math teacher. I was the new kid at the school trying to fit in, and whenever I seemed frustrated—as most teens do—I would look across at him, and he would give me a small smirk. It appeared as though he was letting me know to stop worrying about the little things. Mr. Menzies not only was my teacher but he taught my husband, son and daughter. I send my condolences to his friends and family. - Posted by: Bonnie Lachance (Student) on: Apr 18, 2023

I grew up in Elmwood and went to Elmwood High School. I got to know Gord well as my coach when I played with the Elmwood Giants in the 70s. Gord was a quiet man but had a great sense of humor and was always part of the Giants team. Gord was of the nicest men you will meet and was always respected on and off the field. He will be missed, God Bless - Posted by: Ken kulcsycki (Friend and coach) on: Apr 16, 2023

I was saddened to hear of Gord's passing. I remember Gord as a colleague on the coaching staff of the Eastside Eagles Bantam Football club in the 1970's. He was very generous with his time as we all put in a lot of hours in those days. I know that he continued on as a volunteer with the Eagles and the Elmwood Giants Baseball club long after I left Eastside. Gord was a real gentleman and had a great sense of humor. To the family, my sincere condolences and always remember the good times. Rest in peace Gord. - Posted by: Aubrey Settee (friend) on: Apr 16, 2023

I am saddened to read about the passing of Mr. Menzies as he was known to me. Fortunately, I was able to know him in both capacities as my middle school teacher at General Byng and later on as my coach with the Elmwood Giants Jr. team. Mr. Menzies was a hard working and dedicated volunteer who went out of his way to help with any project that required his leadership. You will be remembered Mr. Menzies, rest in peace. - Posted by: Dave Adams (Former student and Elmwood Giant) on: Apr 15, 2023

I only knew Gord through our encounters as part of the Elmwood Giants "family"... first, in the 1970's as a player when he helped out as an assistant coach, and again through several years of my own efforts to help the Club field some of its many winning teams. Gord was part of the "glue" that helped hold that family together in many ways, notably by contributing to the irregular newsletters and helping to get them out to people by maintaining the mailing lists. He also spent countless hours helping comb through the microfilmed newspaper archives at the Winnipeg Public Library to build the existing collection of paper records of the Club's history. I (we) will miss him! Rick (and Carmen) Dondo - Posted by: Rick Dondo (Friend) on: Apr 15, 2023
