Peacefully, and with her daughter by her side, Helen passed away on April 22, 2023 at Calvary Place Personal Care Home at the age of 85.
Mom was born in the RM of Springfield, Manitoba, on July 23, 1937 to parents Nick and Rose Hrynyk. The family moved to Oakbank, where she attended Cornwall School, and later moved to Vivian, where she attended Corrall School. In 1953, Mom moved to Winnipeg to start her first job working at Eaton’s. In April 1958, she married my Dad. Dad, being a military man, was transferred to France in 1964, and over the course of the next three years, fond memories were made from trips and family camping trips to different countries in Europe. Mom especially loved Switzerland. 1967 brought us back to Portage la Prairie. During Mom’s years in Portage, she worked at Portage Mutual, was a member of the Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary and was my Brownie leader. In 1977, Mom moved back to Winnipeg, where, coming full circle, she went back to work at Eaton’s.
Mom loved flowers and gardening, and her home was always a welcoming place for family and friends. She also made the best gumdrop cake and thimble cookies!
Mom will be lovingly remembered by her daughter MaryLee Hasper and son-in-law Robert Payea. Also left to cherish her memory are her ex-husband Ken, sister Mary Allen, nephews, nieces and friends.
Thank you to the wonderful and caring staff at Calvary Place for the kindness and compassion shown to Mom over the last year. You truly are a blessing.
Funeral service and Celebration of Life was held on Friday, April 28, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Mom’s memory to Canadian Cancer Society or Heart and Stroke Foundation.
