On May 13, 2023, Lilian Mary Hay Cords, at the age of 83, passed peacefully, with her daughter and husband by her side in Grandview Personal Care Home.
Lilian was born January 23, 1940, in Winnipeg, to Scottish emigrants, Helen Mitchell Hay (Davidson) and George Winton Hay.
From the age of 5 until Lilian was 13, she took classical violin lessons at the Bornoff School of Music and the Konrad Conservatory of Music. She was a lifelong avid reader, loved gardening, and sewing.
Lilian grew up in Winnipeg and attended Daniel McIntyre colligate from 1955 to 1957. In 1992 she graduated from the University of Winnipeg, Bachelor of Arts - Sociology.
Lilian worked at Great West Life in Winnipeg until she married Melvyn Christian (1959 to 1985). Soon after that they moved to Ottawa. There she worked for the government of Canada. While in Ottawa they welcomed their first son Bruce and then their daughter Susan.
In the spring of 1965 they moved to the farm in the Swan River Valley. In 1967 Lilian and Melvyn welcomed their third child Mark.
In December 1973 they moved to Gimli. There she worked at the daycare in Aspen Park. In December 1975 they moved to Winnipeg. Lilian worked for Revenue Canada from 1967 to 1978. In 1978 they purchased Kehler Skis. Lilian was their office manager while Melvyn manufactured air craft skis until their divorce.
From 1988 to 1995, Lilian was office administrator for Paul Edwards M.L.A. St. James. Then she was office administrator for Marlene Cowling M.P. Dauphin-Swan River from 1995 to 1997. The office was in Grandview and that is where Lilian and Charles Cords met, fell in love, and got married, February 14, 1997.
In Grandview she coordinated the Manitoba Lung Association canvass, delivered the United Church service tapes to shut-ins, and sang in the church choir. Lilian was on many boards while living in Grandview: The Parkway Co-op, the Seniors Drop-in Centre, and the Bakeshop. She was also part of the Grandview Book club, and the Quilting Club.
Lilian was predeceased by her parents Helen and George Hay, Melvyn Christian and Charles Cords; and grandson Benjamin Christian.
Lilian is survived by her three children, Bruce, Suraya (Peter), and Mark; seven grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and cousins. Lilian will be dearly missed by family and friends.
We would like to thank all the staff at the Grandview Personal Care Home for the love and compassion shown to Lilian. We would also like to thank Dr. Rae, Dr. Elliot and Sheila Kringle, for their medical care.
A graveside service will be held for Lilian at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave, on June 9 at 11:30 a.m. with. Reverend Don McIntyre officiating.
Donations instead of flowers may be made in her name to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
