MELVIN WINSTON OTTO

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our Dad at his home in Selkirk, Manitoba, at the age of 84 years. Mel passed peacefully with his family by his side.

Left to mourn are his children, Debra (Dave), Keith (Karen), Jo-Anne (Raymond), Robert (Carol), Brenda (Richard), Heather (Jim) and Colleen (Gerald); 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Donna (Sandy) in 2015 and his grandson Shane in 2011.

Mel was born May 3, 1939 in Thalberg, Manitoba. In 1954 Mel met the love of his life, Donna and in 1959 they married, settled down and started raising their family of seven children. They resided in Beausejour, Manitoba for a number of years, before moving to the family farm in Glenmoor, Manitoba. Along with working the farm, Mel worked for Schreyer Construction, GenPeg, Texaco, Beausejour Redi Mix and spent many winters up north clearing bush. In 1990 Mel and Donna moved to Selkirk, Manitoba where Mel worked for Selkirk Redi Mix, followed by Manitoba Hydro, where he subsequently retired in 2016. Mel loved reminiscing and sharing stories of times he held close to his heart, in particular the winters working up north, and memories of his beloved Clydesdale, Barney.

Mel's funeral service will take place on May 29, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Gilbart Funeral Home, 309 Eveline Street, Selkirk, Manitoba. Interment will follow in the Beausejour Cemetery, Beausejour, Manitoba.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Lindenschmidt, Dr. Kansara and the CancerCare staff at St. Boniface Hospital and Selkirk Regional Health Centre.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of their choice.

Condolences may be left on his tribute wall at www.gilbartfuneralhome.com
