It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Audrey Louise Van Hellemond, 78, of Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 25, 2023, at the Riverview Health Centre Palliative Care Unit, with her family by her side.
Audrey was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Dorothy and Jim Dunn. She grew up with two sisters, Barbara and Dorothy. The family moved to Moose Jaw and then to Toronto where Audrey attended Richview Collegiate Institute. A last move back to Winnipeg was made in 1962 where Audrey met the love of her life, Jack. They were married July 20, 1963. They raised their two children, Sandra and David, and lived on Whitegates Crescent where they made many memories and friendships. In the mid-1990s, Audrey and Jack moved to Kiltarton Towers, where they spent many happy years. They travelled to see family in Holland and Ottawa and enjoyed their many get-aways to Mahnomen. Audrey worked for many years at Marks & Spencer and Pacific Linen. She loved listening to country music although Elvis had a special place in her heart. Family was the priority for Audrey in her life. She was a loving wife, mother, Nanny (Grandma), sister and friend.
Audrey will be lovingly remembered and missed by her daughter Sandra and son-in-law Morgan Smail and son David and daughter-in-law Helena Van Hellemond. Also left to cherish her memory are grandchildren, Stephanie (Maurice) Hilmerich, Scott (Megan Neufeld) Van Hellemond, Eric (Emily) Smail, Lauren (Brayden Dewar) Smail and Marissa Smail as well as great grandchildren, Logan, Dean, Chloe and Sophie Hilmerich and Caleb Smail. She is also survived by her two sisters, Barbara (David) Duff and Dorothy Thomson and brothers-in-law, Andy (Cheryl) and Bruce (Arlene) Van Hellemond as well as her many nieces and nephews.
Audrey was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Jack, in 2020 and by her parents, Dorothy and Jim Dunn, brother-in-law Douglas Thomson, in-laws, Agatha and John Van Hellemond and sister-in-law Joan and brother-in-law Wally Norquay.
There will not be a service. Please send memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society. The family would like to thank the staff of the Riverview Health Centre Palliative Care Unit for their exceptional care.
