It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Dr. Laila Sekla-Farag suddenly on July 21, 2023, aged 91.
Laila will be sadly missed and remembered by her family, relatives and friends in Canada, the USA, Switzerland, Egypt and the UK.
Born in Cairo, Egypt on August 23, 1931, Laila graduated with a degree in Medicine from the University of Alexandria, (Egypt) in 1957 and a PhD in Medicine from the London School of Tropical Medicine, (UK) in 1968 after which she came to Winnipeg to accept a senior position at the Cadham Provincial Lab where she enjoyed a fruitful and rewarding career until her retirement in 1992. Throughout her life, Laila embodied joie de vivre and a spirit of commitment and loyalty to family, friends and colleagues. Those who knew her were drawn to her enthusiasm, curious mind, and cheerfulness.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Ignatius Church on Friday, August 4, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. followed by interment at Assumption Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Dr. Laila Sekla-Farag’s name to the charity of your choice.

Laila was my neighbor at Portsmouth. She lived across the hall from me and we were friends for a long time. We talked every day and even when I had to move from Portsmouth to a place I could receive more care we talked almost every day on phone. Our sincere condolence to the family of Dr L.Sekla. She was a great manager of the department of Serology and Parasitology at the Cadham Provincial Laboratory. Always very kind and compassionate to her staff. She was a Visionary and forever in pursuit of excellence. She will be sadly missed.
