HELEN WENSEL (NOVAK)

On September 5, 2023, just a month shy of her 99th birthday, and on what would have been Norman’s 102nd birthday, Helen passed away peacefully with her daughter by her side.

Helen was born on October 13, 1924, to Michael and Barbara Nowak, youngest of eight and last surviving sibling. Helen was predeceased by husband Norman; sister Kay; and brothers, Walter, John, Ed, Frank, Charlie and Joey. She is survived by son Gary (Joann); daughter Wendy Marsch (Ross); grandchildren, Kerry Porter (Megan) and Marla Hughesman (Andrew); great-grandchildren, Jaina, Isaac, Gwen, Katelynn and Tyler; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Helen grew up in the North End attending Shaughnessy and Lord Nelson Schools. She met Norman at a dance in Weston and they were married on October 13, 1945, after Norman returned from the war. They settled in Weston raising their two children there.

Helen worked for Eaton’s Mail Order until retirement. She was active in 10 pin bowling and participated in the occasional golf game and always looked forward to a rousing game of cards. Helen and Norman travelled extensively with family and friends. Helen was an excellent cook mastering many Ukrainian dishes.

Helen was a very strong woman soldiering on after Norm’s passing in 2010. She lived on her own in a 55+ apartment to the age of 98. She treasured the friendship of the Sinawik Kiwanis gals. Thank you so much for all your help.

As sad as we are to say goodbye, we are so thankful for her healthy and long life.

In lieu of flowers or donations, we ask you to raise a glass to Helen’s life and her incredible longevity.

Celebration of Life to be held at a later date.

Many thanks to the St. Boniface Hospital staff and Alterna Cremation staff.

Memories and condolences may be shared and viewed by visiting Helen’s memorial page at www.alternacremation.ca.
