It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Eugene's passing. After bravely facing cancer, he peacefully passed on the sunny morning of September 19, 2023, with Diane, Lara, Sandra and Lloyd by his side.
Eugene is survived by stepdaughters, Min (Larry) Gering and Mern (Pat) Budge; daughter-in-law Diane Price and their families, his nieces and nephews and many dear friends.
He was predeceased by his wife Violet; stepson Mike Price; grandson James Gering; parents, Michael and Franciscka; brothers, Walter, Nester and Alex; sisters, Olga and Josephine, and nephew Edwin Paley.
In their early years, Eugene and his brothers farmed on the homestead in Gypsumville. During the winter season, they were commercial fishermen. All through his adult life, Eugene was a Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanic. He worked at CFS Gypsumville Pineimuta, served as a Council Member for the LGD of Grahamdale from 1974 to 1991. He was an active member of Whitetail & Walleye, Game & Fish Association since 1988 taking pride in his skill of head scoring each year. Eugene worked as a hunting guide at Jerry Podborski's outfitting business in Skownen where he along with his stepson, Mike, and Violet, who oversaw camp cooking.
With a passion for gardening, Eugene diligently cultivated multiple gardens every year. Planting an abundance of produce that and he and Violet graciously shared with many families.
In Eugene’s later years he married the love of his life, Violet. With bounds of banter and mounds of filling, together they curated what will forever be known as the largest perogie hustle on this side of the hill. Along with an impressive catering business serving many surrounding communities. Many memories were made around their busy perogie table.
When Eugene married Violet, he gained many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. In the earlier days of their marriage Eugene and Vi would invite the grandkids up to the farmhouse in Gypsumville. He’d introduce them to the largest potato garden their little eyes had ever seen. Each trip to the farm, Eugene would take the grandkids down to the pond and entertain them by feeding the rainbow trout.
Eugene was one of a kind, unique man. His knowledge and memory for all things was impressive.
Hunting, trapping, fishing, camping, berry picking and Craven Music Festival are just a few of the highlights of his lifetime’s entertainment. Eugene had many stories to share of the different adventures he found himself on. A life well lived.
Min and Larry were always attentive to Eugene’s needs, ensuring that he was well fed, and remained skilled in the game of cribbage. His enjoyment when beating Larry in a game of crib was entertaining and prompted Eugene to frequently embark on visits to Min and Larry's to try his hand at delivering Larry a skunked outcome.
Those big hands had no comparison to his big heart. After his son-in-law Mike passed away, Eugene was sure to drop by a few times a week and pay a visit to Diane’s to discuss the latest happenings in the community or to simply sit in her company. He brought comfort to Diane and her family with his presence at such a difficult time.
Eugene’s generous nature and willingness to help others was truly remarkable. Granddaughter Lara purchased Eugene and Violet’s home in Moosehorn in 2018 with the promise that Papa Eugene could keep his tools in the garage, plant a garden and help with the grass cutting. He consistently went above and beyond, helping, sometimes before she even realized she needed it.
He looked forward to deer hunting at The Pink Shack every year with his stepson Mike, grandsons, Mikey and Benji and good friend, Klaus. The past couple of years, Eugene was very proud to share in this time with the families next generation of hunters his great-grandsons, Bentyn and Lucas.
Papa Eugene taught Bentyn and Lucas the art of planting and caring for their own garden and how to play cribbage. A beautiful display of pride when watching a great-grandfather being defeated by his own prodigy in a game of cribbage.
One could not write enough to describe his beautiful life but, ‘dis’ year’, we think we got close.
We would like to thank the home care staff who tended to Eugene at his home the past few years. Your kindness and care for him was beautiful. The nursing and care staff, EMS, and Dr. Mollie and Dr. Gendi at Lakeshore General Hospital, thank you for the compassion and level of care given to Eugene.
As per Eugene’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, Eugene asked that donation be made to Peace Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, PO Box 68, Moosehorn, MB R0C 2E0.

My condolences to all of Eugene's family... heaven is now a better place. I remember Eugene as a very kind and gentle man with arms and hands to match, yet at the same time could hoist a diesel engine into place when no one else could. Whenever we chanced to meet it always seemed to be at the expense of him helping other people. Although I left the area many years ago he would always remember and acknowledge me whenever I would return on occasion, even though he was a generation older than me. He was a very generous and hard working man and left a lasting legacy for his family. He was a memorable, one-of-a-kind, whom I still think of often even though I have not seen him in quite awhile. - Posted by: Howard McDonnell (Friend) on: Oct 10, 2023

Uncle Eugene was a impressive figure in my childhood. Every trip to the farm included visits with him and each one was memorable. He was kind and cared for all human and animal alike. I remember his black lab Shebia, they were inseparable. Rest easy and the crib table in heaven has added another player. - Posted by: Charlene (Ivaniski) Gratton (Family Freind) on: Oct 01, 2023

Indeed Eugene was a very kind and very knowledgeable person. He was always there to help anyone. His gardening skills and advise helped many people. As the municipal councilor in 1989 he played a leading role in fire suppression in the Gypsumsville area. He brought about a wildfire public relations session to the local residents. He loved an outdoor challenge. Rest in peace Eugene. - Posted by: Jack & Christine Kowalchuk (friends) on: Sep 30, 2023
