EUGENIA (JEAN) SAHAN

1932 - 2023

Peacefully called by the Lord on Sunday, November 26. Jean is survived by her daughter Christine (Philip), son Mark (Laura); granddaughters Mel (Trish), Katryna, Kaelyn, and Talia; great-grandchildren Emma, Hayley (Sarah) and Brandt; sister-in-law Terri; nephew Christopher; niece Susan; grand-nephews Jamie and Jason; cousins and their families. She was predeceased by her loving husband Walter; her parents John and Eva; brothers-in-law Nicholas, Doug, and Frank; sisters-in-law Mary and Ollie; niece Sandra; nephew Dennis; cousins.

Jean was a lifetime member of the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church where she joyfully served as the office secretary for 30 years. In recognition of her service and friendship, the St. Nicholas Church honoured her with an Appreciation Award for her dedicated service in 2001. The Basilian Order presented her with a certificate in 2000, a rare honour, that acknowledged her as a spiritual member of the Order of St. Basil the Great in Canada.

She was a member of the Apostleship of Prayer, the UCWLC, the church and millennial choirs, the perogy crew; she also served as an SSMI Associate.

Jean’s involvement with the Immaculate Heart of Mary School (formerly St. Nicholas School) project earned her a papal medal, “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice” in 1963.

Jean was very devoted to her family and friends. She loved to cook and bake and delighted in watching everyone enjoy her delectable creations. Food really was her love language.

We were very blessed to have her with us for all these years and will miss her.

Thank you, Jean, Mom, Baba, Babcha. You will live in our hearts forever. You can rest with Dad now.

A special thank you to the incredible staff from Holy Family Home for their loving care for Mom over the last number of years.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 4, 2023, at 11:00 AM at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 737 Bannerman Ave.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Lubov SSMI Foundation Inc.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Very sorry to hear this news only now. "Genia", as we knew her, a short form "Yevhenia" in Ukrainian, was our faithful secretary and supporter for many years. She was a pilar of the parish and the community, one of a group of very active youth from the 1940s, who joined Father Boniface Slobodan's choir. They remained leaders for over fifty years. I had the privilege to know and work with them and sing with them too, in the 1980s and 2000s. She used to remind me that the late Father Raphael Melnyk used to call her "Jean, Jean". Walter was a living saint an and we will miss both of them very much. I celebrated the Divine Liturgy for their eternal repose. - Posted by: Father Athanasius (friend) on: Dec 22, 2023
