MARIA ROMANOVYCH
Maria passed away peacefully on December 10th. Left to remember her are daughter Christine and son Andrew, grandchildren, Marko, Vera, Roman (Elis), Alexander and Drew. She was predeceased by husband Roman, and children, Roma (Ihor), George and Myrocia (Ken).
She was born on December 13, 1925 in Kolomea Region of Carpathian Mountains, Ukraine. Life was difficult growing up during chaotic war years, she lost her father as a child and later her four brothers.
Post war, Maria and her mother left for Hamburg, Germany where daughter Christine was born, not long after her first husband died. She later met and married Roman. In Hamburg, she worked in a shoe factory, supporting her family while Roman was finishing his veterinary studies. Then came the boat journey to Halifax, arriving at Pier 21. Travelling by train, they settled in Toronto where daughter Roma was born in 1952. Shortly after they moved to Winnipeg, settling in Garden City where Roman began working for Agriculture Canada as a vet.
Maria immersed herself in her Ukrainian culture, she had a beautiful soprano voice and was a member of the O. Koshetz Memorial Choir. She sang for many years and enjoyed the choir’s world tours. She also loved to garden, tend to her flowers, play volleyball at Ukrainian Park, take walks in Kildonan Park, the Jets, and take care of the stray animals her kids brought home. She made Christmas a special time for her family. She always enjoyed when carolers would drop by, hosting them and joining them in song. She did her best with what she was given.
Our family would like to thank the staff at Maples Personal Care Home for looking after Maria. Prayers will be held on January 11, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main Street with internment at All Saints Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Cathedral, for Kitchen Renovations.
