AMARJIT GILL

January 5, 1940 - December 16, 2023

With family by her side, Amarjit Kaur Gill passed away peacefully on December 16, 2023, in Calgary, Alberta. She is survived by her daughters Rani (Raj Aujla) and Vinni (Scott Farlinger); her son Ranbir (Randeep Gill); her grandchildren, Manpreet and Raman Aujla, Simran and Roop Farlinger, and Amar and Amrit Gill; her sister Pritam; and her nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends.

Amarjit was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Jagjit Singh Gill, her parents Bharpur Singh, and Bachan Kaur Dhaliwal; her sisters Nihal, Gurdial and Jasmail; and her brother Ranjit.

Born in Bilaspur, India, Mom’s early years spent on the farm taught her the values of kindness, hard work, and discipline. A devout Sikh, Mom’s spirituality guided everything she did throughout her whole life. She fondly remembered her time spent living with her eldest sister in Amritsar, where she could visit the Golden Temple each day. She was a keen student, excelling in her studies - especially in Language and in Mathematics - and earning a master’s degree at a young age. When she and Dad immigrated to Canada in the late 1960s, she embraced life in Winnipeg, making friends and helping to build the Sikh community. She could most often be found at the Gurdwara, which was the centre of her community.

Mom showed her love and support for others in many ways. High among them was through her cooking. She was happiest sharing her home cooking with her family and friends, amongst good conversation, laughter, and the occasional game of cards.

She worked hard to build a life for our family and encouraged our educational pursuits. Her calm approach helped to solve any problem, and we grew up knowing that she was always there for us. She was a constant positive force in our lives.

Mom was an expert in sewing, knitting, and embroidery, and she passed these skills on to her children and grandchildren. Certainly, her most enjoyable role in life was that of Nani Ji and Dadi Ji to her grandchildren, whom she loved immensely. Her last years were spent enjoying time with them. She was loved and will be dearly missed.

Funeral arrangements will take place in Calgary.

In living memory of Amarjit Gill, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes, Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB T2S 2L5, Telephone: 403-243-8200.

  • I am so sorry to read this! Amarjit was a quietly magnificent person. Fully, firmly and lovingly committed to her family and community, she was an amazingly stable and calm presence, never wanting to interfere, only to help where she was needed. Her modesty belied her true wisdom, intelligence and value. She also made truly legendary samosas. Rani, please contact me (reach out to my mother for my info)! - Posted by: Susan Kayesar (Friend) on: Dec 22, 2023
