JOHN DUNCAN ANDERSON

February 12, 1954 -

December 12, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our brother, uncle and friend John Duncan Anderson. He faced his short cancer battle with bravery and as much dignity as the situation allowed, all while maintaining his dry sense of humour. Visits were always concluded with “Thanks for coming”.

Born in Winnipeg and growing up in Fort Garry, John spent his entire life mere miles from the family home. He will be remembered as a gentle, private and artistic man who had a great love of music, antique toys and cars. Others may remember him with a wink and a smile as “John of the North”.

John’s love of cars began at a very young age, including toys, models and of course life-sized cars. He especially enjoyed driving around in his 1954 and 1951 Hudsons, watching people take second looks and smiling at the beauty of his cars. He took many trips to car and toy shows all over North America with frequent stops in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

John had an incredible vocabulary, always having a dictionary close at hand and a pen for doodling. Not surprisingly, he was a fierce Scrabble player sticking to the hardcore rules of the game. John was known to be indelicate adding flavour to any conversation.

John was predeceased by his parents, George and Doreen Anderson, and by his friend and companion Ruth. Left to mourn his passing are siblings Grant, Laura (Dave), Dianne, cousin and good friend Dave, nephew Devan, nieces Annie and Shayla.

Our family would like to thank the medical staff at St. Boniface Hospital for the compassion and care John received in his final days.

A celebration of life will take place on January 12 at The Pony Corral, 400 Wilton St. from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m.

In leu of flowers, please make a donation to Cancer Care or St Boniface Hospital in John's memory.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I met John Anderson through Johnny Sanders, as well as many of his other pals. I never knew John that well, but I was at his house several times and remember his wicked sense of humor, his clever cartoons and all the many toy cars he collected. He was a unique character. To the Anderson family, my sincere condolences. Carlie. - Posted by: Carolyn Gillespie (friend) on: Dec 31, 2023

  • John was a great guy to hang out with. Great sense of humour, wonderful singing voice and an incredibly funny cartoonist. I remember Ronald McDonald from his old cartoons among other characters. Ronald McDonald as you've never seen him. Hilarious and really well drawn. There were many nights over at John's place where he and friends listened to music and had a good time. John used to say, "We're all rental property" regarding this life of ours. Bon voyage Johnny. You were my friend and I'll miss you. - Posted by: Michael McIsaac (Friend) on: Dec 29, 2023

  • It was a great ride while it lasted Johnny. Gonna miss our lunches at Hooters. Say hi to Johnny Kimono when you see him and safe travels my friend. - Posted by: Cousin Davey (Cousin / Friend) on: Dec 26, 2023

  • John was a truly unique character. I worked with him for several years and we certainly had our laughs and got into a bit of trouble at times. His intelligence was amazing, he appreciated great music and had a love of old cars - in fact the last time I saw John was at a car show just this autumn at the Pony Corral. I am honoured to have known you and will miss my visits to Dudley Ave. over “tea”. Rest easy old pal. - Posted by: Jim Malloy (co worker and pal ) on: Dec 23, 2023

  • Rest in peace my dear friend. Love you. Thanks for the memories of hanging out and driving around in the Hudson's, spending time with you at your home, and just being a great guy who loved his friends. RIP Johnny A. - Posted by: Pal (Freind) on: Dec 23, 2023
