Arthur Toews passed away peacefully at 97 years old on February 14, 2024.
Arthur was predeceased by the love of his life Mary, to whom he was a very loving husband and caregiver, and son Ronald.
Art was loved dearly by all who knew him. He was well known as a very kind man, a hard worker and someone you could always count on for a good bear hug. He was a wonderful Father and will be greatly missed by his sons, Les Toews, wife Linda, Percy Toews, and daughter Candace Kostelnuk and her husband Craig. He was a very special Grandpa to grandchildren, Anthony Toews, wife Christal, Chad Toews, Shane Kostelnuk, wife Shyanne, Carmine Wilson, husband Devin, Amber Kostelnuk and Tustin Toews as well as two great-grandsons, Elijah and baby Roman, who he was so excited to welcome recently to the family. He will be remembered and missed by many other family and friends including his last surviving brother Norman Toews. No doubt his cat Ollie who kept him very good company over the last few years will miss him too.
Art was born on May 29, 1926, on a farm in Altona, Manitoba. He worked hard on the family farm, even taking part in a long wagon trip driving cattle when the family moved from Westbourne to Niverville in 1937. He was a true craftsman and an entrepreneur from a young age, manufacturing and selling lathes at 16. He later went on to have his own stucco and step repair business, Midwest Stucco and Construction, working on homes and buildings all around Manitoba.
Art and his wife Mary’s love story began when he spotted her plowing in the field behind a team of horses. They were married June 27, 1948, and shared almost 70 years together. They built several of their own homes as well as the beloved family cottage at Grand Beach. Art’s children and grandchildren will cherish the many memories made with them there, especially picking berries, watching sunsets, long beach walks and ice creams at Lanky’s. He loved all his family very much and was known when you said “I love you” to respond with “I love you more “.
Art was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and had great faith in the promises and hope for the future found in the Bible. He loved to share them with all those he met. He spent a lot of time throughout his life doing this as well as working as a volunteer on many construction projects. One promise that he treasured most was the hope of being resurrected to a paradise earth and being reunited with his family.
His family would like to thank all of his home care workers, as well as the staff at the Grace Hospital and palliative care ward at St. Boniface Hospital.
A memorial will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. at 227 Lakewood Blvd., Winnipeg. For those not able to join us, arrangements have been made to stream the service over Zoom. (Meeting ID 204 000 0794 Password: arttoews) (Phone connection 1-204-272-7920 Password 80276517)

Family, my sincere condolences. Many years have passed, however….fond memories remain of a kind and generous family of whose company I enjoyed very much during my youth. The service today for your father was a wonderful reminder of that. Wishing you well….. - Posted by: Brenda Dupuis Smith (Neighbour ) on: Mar 16, 2024

I was very sad to learn about Art passing away. I have great memories of him (and his family) as I was growing up. I enjoyed Art’s sense of humour and contagious smile. And he sure knew how to dance! I look forward to when we will see him again in Jehovah’s promised new world when death will be no more (Rev. 21:4). To the entire family, please accept my sincere condolences and love. - Posted by: Cindy LoPresti (Long time friend ) on: Mar 09, 2024
