SANDRA MARGARET PROUDFOOT

November 23, 1940 - April 28, 2024

Peacefully on April 28, 2024, Sandra went to be with her beloved husband John and son Michael, following a lengthy struggle with various health challenges.

She leaves to grieve her son Cliff (Karen), daughter-in-law Joan and grandchildren, Alec (Alisha), Bruce, Madeline, and Spencer, and her sister Marina, her brothers-in-law, Jim and Donald, and many nieces and nephews. Her husband John, son Michael, parents, Clifford and Gladys, and sisters, Gloria and Marilynn predeceased her.

The youngest daughter of a lawyer and businessman, Sandra lived nearly all of her life in Winnipeg. She graduated from Kelvin High School then attended United College in 1958. It was here she met John and established many lifelong friendships including her very special friends Keith and Helen Black. After graduation with her B.ED and B.A. from the University of Manitoba, she found that teaching in the school library was her true vocation. She taught in the Winnipeg School Division until her retirement in 1997 with an interregnum of nine years to raise and nurture her two sons. She worked on many projects during her career, and was a leader in the adoption of computers and technology both in the classroom and later in the school library. Her career was marked by her warmth and caring for children and staff. She developed close relationships in all of the schools where she taught. Sandra’s care and attention to all of her students in reading, computing, and researching helped inspire a generation of young people.

Sandra’s life was rich and full. She was an independent woman with strong convictions and she formed a magnificent partnership with her husband John. She was the foil to John’s optimism and his approach to life that the glass was always half full. She sweated the details for John and the entire family. She could be counted on when the chips were down and times were tough. She was a wonderful grandmother to her four grandchildren. She considered her nieces, Sharyn, Colleen, Marianne, Lisa, Kathy and Karen, and the Black girls, Nancy and Andrea, and daughters-in-law, Karen and Joan to be her daughters.

She possessed great intelligence, empathy and spirit, all of which led to a wide variety of interests. She loved reading, was an avid book club member and bridge player, and was a huge Bomber and Jets fan. For Sandra, like John she loved to eat a good meal, read a good book, or have a good discussion. Her time at the cottage at Falcon Lake was special, and she loved to share the accomplishments of her sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren. She was a tireless worker at Grace Bible Church, and she was supported with a strong foundation of faith.

The last few years have been difficult for Sandra and those around her as she succumbed to the relentless path of heart disease. However, her empathy and graciousness never faltered.

A service celebrating Sandra’s life will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Grace Bible Church at 366 Oakwood Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

  • I don't have any opportunity to meet with Sandra but always ask after her from her daughter. What amazed me from her tribute was that Sandra was loved by people and above all she had a strong faith by serving tirelessly in the Church. What can say again, she lived a fulfilled life and knew Christ was everything. Sandra keeps resting in the bosom of your maker till we meet to part no more. May the good Lord keep the family and give them the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss. - Posted by: Remilekun Obadina (Colleague to her daughter (Diane)) on: May 31, 2024

  • It was a privilege to work with Sandra in her several school library programs in WSD. She was conscientious, creative and caring in her work with the students and teachers. It was a great pleasure to observe her working with the teachers to integrate the library program into their teaching strategies. She loved the children, and her work with them. Sandra was a regular contributor to the professional development program for teacher-librarians in the WSD system. You were deeply appreciated, Sandra. May you now rest in peace with your other family members. Gerald Brown, Chief Librarian. - Posted by: Gerald R. Brown (Chief Librarian, Winnipeg School Division, (retired 1992)) on: May 31, 2024
