It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mom, Diane, at the age of 86.
Diane is survived by daughters, Shannon (Tom) Pyziak, Pam (Ed) Holik, and son Brad (Paula) Gard, grandchildren, Colton (Justine) Pyziak, Carter Pyziak, Sabrina (Blake) Heynen, Brittany Holik, Melissa (Cole) Dawson, Ryland Gard (Maggie) and Macrae Gard, great-grandchildren, Jack, Charlie, and Emma Heynen, Lincoln Pyziak, and Walker Dawson, sister Anna Forgey (Don), special nephew Stuart Gard, special niece Glenda Gard, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband Charles Gard, parents, Gudny and Oddur Guttormson, brothers, Herman (Mabel), Thordur (Noreen), Mike (Doreen) and sisters, Agnes (Bill) Laing, Bjorg (Arvid) Elliot, and twin sister Lulu (Joseph) Rebizant.
Diane was born and raised on the family farm in Husavik, Manitoba. She attended Normal School with her sister, Lulu, to become a permit teacher. After graduating, she took a teaching position in Ringrose School, a one room school house located a few miles from Fisher Branch. Our dad always said it was his good luck that mom’s living accommodations fell through, so instead she stayed with his brother and wife, and the rest was history.
Mom and dad were married on June 23, 1956, and would have celebrated 68 years of marriage this year. They lived in Winnipeg briefly, before moving out to live and farm full time in Fisher Branch. Mom worked alongside dad on the farm often helping in the fields, with haying, and calving. When dad started his Auctioneering business, mom was totally invested and was cashier for every single sale he had. She enjoyed those days, socializing with customers, remembering everyone’s name, and balancing every sale to the penny.
Family was important to mom. Attending school and sporting events that family and grandchildren were involved in was a must. She loved their camping trips when grandchildren would come to stay and visit. Gimli’s Icelandic Celebration where we visited with mom’s siblings and their families was a highlight every year. As well, our home was often a place where her nieces and nephews stayed for days or weeks in the summer.
Although mom has been described by many as quiet, she enjoyed participating in the community. She was a member of the Fisherton Women’s Institute for many years, seldom missing a meeting or event. She loved to curl, spending many evenings and weekends at the rink. She enjoyed cards, and she and dad would drive the cribbage circuit in our local communities.
We would like to thank the staff at St. Josephs Home for the care they provided to mom.
We love you mom and will miss you very much!
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. in the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Fisher Branch.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Fisher Personal Care Home Foundation Inc., Box 548, Fisher Branch, Manitoba R0C 0Z0.
