OLGA ONYSCHUK

(nee ZYWYLO)

It is with great sadness that the family announce the passing of Olga Onyschuk on Monday, July 8, 2024.

She was predeceased by her parents, Petro and Maria Zywylo, brothers, George, Bill, and John, sister Alexandra, father and mother in-law John and Josie Oneschuk, and brother and sister in-law Len and Penny Oneschuk. She is survived by her husband Don Onyschuk, daughters, Natasha (Corey) and Tanya (Chris), grandson Andrew, and sister-in-law Lena Zywylo, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Olga was born in the village of Kovalivka, Poltava, Ukraine during the Second World War. The family then lived in a refugee camp in Cornberg, Germany before immigrating to Canada in 1949 and settling in Winnipeg. She attended Luxton School, St. John’s High School, and TEC-VOC High School where she met Don. Don and Olga married in 1965 and went on to spend 59 happy years together, building their Algonquin Avenue family home and enjoying many road-trips across Canada and the U.S with the girls.

Determined, hard-working and intelligent, Olga spent most of her working life with the City of Winnipeg in social services, eventually becoming a department supervisor. Retiring in 1995, Olga kept busy volunteering, particularly in the Ukrainian community as her heritage was a very important part of her life. She was on a variety of committees and worked in the kitchen at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral, served on the Board of Directors of Rozmai Ukrainian School of Dance, and helped at various Ukrainian Community events throughout the years. Olga also enjoyed spending many summers cooking for the campers at the Legion Athletic Camp in the Peace Gardens.

Olga was a kind and generous person who was always willing to lend a helping hand and a shoulder to lean on. She loved entertaining and many happy memories were spent at Olga and Don’s where everyone enjoyed her delicious cooking, great conversations, and spirited debates. Her warmth and smile will be remembered fondly, and she will be lovingly missed.

The family would like to thank the staff at St. Boniface Hospital on Unit E4 who were very kind and caring during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers we ask you to consider donating to the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice.
