LAWRENCE (LARRY) MARQUARDSON

Lawrence (Larry) Marquardson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, coach, teacher, and friend, passed away on January 5, 2025, at the age of 77, after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. Born in Winnipeg, Larry was the epitome of selflessness, generosity, and love, dedicating his life to his family, students, and community.

Larry was a devoted husband to Brenda, his partner of over five decades, and a proud father to Carly (Mark) and Kirsten (Aaron). He cherished his grandchildren, Asher and Olivia, whose smiles lit up his world.

A celebrated educator and coach, Larry spent over 30 years at Sargent Park School, where he and Colin Mark built championship-winning basketball and volleyball programs. He believed every child deserved the opportunity to succeed, creating a developmental league and breaking down barriers by covering costs, providing transportation, and organizing fundraising initiatives. His dedication earned him three Manitoba Coach of the Year awards, the Mike Spack Award, and induction into both the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame as a builder and the Manitoba Football Hall of Fame as a player and coach.

Larry’s love for his family was unwavering. He never missed an event, made breakfast for his girls every morning, and cherished summers at the lake and evenings by the bonfire with close friends Larry and Marianne. His humor, warmth, and selfless devotion made every moment unforgettable.

The family extends their gratitude to the staff at Extendicare Kildonan Personal Care Home for their exceptional care during Larry’s final days.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Larry Marquardson Memorial Basketball Award Fund: MyCharityTools | Donate to Larry Marquardson Memorial Basketball Award Fund. True to Larry’s humble nature, the family will host a small celebration of his life this summer.

Condolences & Memories (16 entries)

  • I would like to offer my condolences to the Marquardson family. I woke up this morning and as my alarm went off Mr. Marquardson popped into my head. I remember a few years ago hearing that he had moved to Arizona and I wondered if he had retired and came across his obituary. Mr. Marquardson was my basketball and volleyball coach at Sargent Park. Not only that, but he would drive from his house all the way across the city and pick up all the girls that lived out of the area and bring us to practice everyday. He believed, he showed up, and he impacted a lot of people along the way. I truly don’t think I’d be where I am today had I not been so deeply impacted by his teachings. I’m very sad to hear about the passing of such an honourable human being. May his legacy live on and may he rest in peace. - Posted by: Aliah Jacob (Student) on: Sep 09, 2025

  • Mr. Marquardson, my Grade 5 homeroom teacher, taught me early on that decisions come with responsibility. This lesson shaped my life. At 36, his wisdom still resonates with me as I aspire to instill the same lesson in the students I work with. I've always meant to thank him personally. Condolences to his loved ones. May his memory endure and inspire. - Posted by: Christian Alvin Zacarias (Former Student) on: Apr 04, 2025

  • Brenda, Carly, Kirsten, Jack, Cliff and families, Sending heartfelt condolences to all. A deep loss for so many! - Posted by: Brenda (Cousin) on: Mar 09, 2025

  • Mr. Marquerdson was my favourite teacher out of all of my years of education. I was intimidated by him before being his student, and almost wanted to request transferring out of his class, but upon arrival was absolutely blessed and fascinated by his class. I enjoyed writing his life story and learning how to do a report/write an essay (grade 6) while hearing the fascinating stories from his life and even now remembering many details which he carefully pieced together for us, teaching us both how to write and also inspiring us with his strength, focus and clarity of thought, infusing countless meaningful actions as observed and experienced by us, his students. Would the family consider having a bigger funeral and allowing people to attend who want to? It would mean a lot to me to be able to come to his funeral. Thank you. - Posted by: Stephanie Ward (Student at Sargent Park) on: Mar 01, 2025

  • Dear Marquardson family: My heartfelt and deepest condolences are with you at this most difficult time. I attended Sisler High School with Larry, and will always remember his kind, caring and gentle manner. He was quite the athlete and heart throb in high school. It was a blessing to know Larry. Stay strong for one another, and always keep Larry in your hearts. Marilyn Corbitt, school mate and friend. - Posted by: Marilyn Corbitt (School mate, and friend.) on: Jan 14, 2025

  • Condolences to Mr. Marquardson’s family, friends and each student who’s had the opportunity to be positively influenced by a caring human, an educator and a person whose values shaped the lives of so many people. He was able to instill in me that perseverance, dedication and north end values gave you strength and confidence to walk out Sisler High School doors and face the world. • Mr. Marquardson was our freshman girls basketball coach at Sisler High in 1977-78 and his lessons resonate with me still. His logical approach to the game and his axioms ("You only need to score one basket to win the game if you play good defence." and others) really hit home with me. He was also the coach who would seek out "non-athletes" in the halls and convince them to play on the school team or inset them into a supporting role, giving them confidence and the camaraderie that comes with team sports. I ran into him years later at a high school volleyball tournament my daughter was playing in and he had a whole troupe of his Sargent Park kids scorekeeping, being line judges and other behind the scenes tasks. It ran like clockwork and was so reflective of him. We lost a legend. My condolences to his family. He will be missed. - Posted by: Shirley Jenken (nee Verstappen) (former student) on: Jan 12, 2025

  • One of a kind - loving, caring and passionate is what I have felt about Mr. Marquardson. I will cherish the many conversations we had during my time at Sargent Park on and off the court about family, basketball, music, even taping up my ankles during injuries. I wouldn't have become the player I was without you in my corner. My sincere condolences to the family. May he Rest in Peace. - Posted by: Sandra Arruda (Student) on: Jan 12, 2025

  • I am incredibly saddened to learn of your untimely loss, Brenda. Larry and I were in Miss Motheral's grade 12 class at Sisler and I remember him as the most gentlemanly fellow ever. He was so kind and unassuming despite all his talents. I am especially moved as my son's father is in hospital at the moment suffering from some effects of Parkinson's after an illustrious business career. May all the pleasant memories you shared serve to sustain you and your family through this very difficult time of grieving the loss of such a beautiful life so well-lived but cut too short. God bless you all. - Posted by: Lana Thiessen-Storey (former Sister classmates well as teacher professional of Larry and Brenda) on: Jan 11, 2025
