SAM ISAMU MATSUO

Peacefully with family by his side, Sam Matsuo passed away on January 10, 2025, at the age of 94. Sam was born on July 3, 1930, in Duncan BC and at the age of 12, when the Second World War started his family was interned in Petersfield, Manitoba where they worked on a sugar beet farm.

In 1947, the family settled in Winnipeg. Sam built an illustrious career in advertising and was a creative genius, who enhanced the quality of advertising design in Winnipeg for more than three decades. It was in Winnipeg where he met his beloved Clare and shared 71 wonderful years together. He was a true partner, loving and endlessly devoted. Together they built a beautiful life filled with love, laughter and countless cherished memories. His family was his greatest pride and his love and dedication to them knew no limits.

He is survived by his beloved wife Clare; children Lori (Steve), Kim (Jeff) and Bobbi (Martyn); grandchildren Jason (Dana), Sean, Chad (Ashton), Eddie (Marco) and Shayna (Mark); and great-grandchildren Knox and Brooks.

Rest in peace Dad. You were a beacon of light in our lives and a constant pillar of love and strength. We will carry your love with us always.

As per Sam's wishes a private family Celebration of Life will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • My deepest sympathies to the entire Matsuo family on Sam's passing. My sister Mary and I were cross country skiing at Bird's Hill Park this weekend and we recalled fondly all the times that we went skiing with Mr. Matsuo and my dad and others from their golf gang. I also recall the wonderful trip our two families took to Palm Springs. Mr. Matsuo was such a kind and fun person to be around and I was very happy to get to spend these times with him and Mrs. Matsuo during the time I was growing up, Sincere condolences, Karen Herd - Posted by: Karen Herd (Friend) on: Jan 29, 2025

  • My sincerest condolences to Clare and family. I always to this day talk about the influence Sam had on me more as a person rather than graphic designer. He was always larger than life to me and I am thankful for being lucky enough to know him and appreciated his guidance in my development as a graphic designer and as a person. He was very special man and will be missed, but not forgotten. - Posted by: Ken McIntyre (Former employee) on: Jan 26, 2025

  • My deepest condolences to Auntie Clare and family on the loss of your husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. I will always remember Uncle Sam as happy and smiling, always interested in knowing how others are doing, devoted to his family and very proud of all of you. He lived a long and happy life. May he rest in peace. Lynn - Posted by: Lynn Campbell (Cousin in laws daughter) on: Jan 25, 2025
