GEORGE DANIELS

George Daniels, aged 76, died after a brief illness at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg on February 3, 2025, less than four months after losing his wife of 49 years. George, known to his Malayali community by his pet name Prasad, was born and brought up in Madras (now Chennai), India and was the eldest son of a physician mother and businessman father. George was indeed a unique individual.

After his degree in English from Madras Christian University, he pursued further education in business administration in the United States, and then moved to Canada after leaving university. On a trip home to India, he met his future wife, Valsa. George and Valsa were married a year later and George helped Valsa get into the medical system in Canada as a doctor and moved around the country to help her meet her goals. They eventually settled in Winnipeg where Valsa got a position, and their son Vijay was born shortly thereafter.

George worked in a variety of manager level positions before joining the federal government as a civilian member at the Air Force base. Despite being a civilian member, his time shooting air rifles in India paid off as he bested the officers in a sharpshooting contest! He completed his career with the Department of Defence and his years of dedication were recognized by signed letters from the Premier of Manitoba and Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

A truly renaissance man, George could identify classical music pieces and composers, wrote/published short stories, enjoyed photography, and was a world traveller with his wife Valsa. As he grew older, he saw the need amongst those who were far less off than him and took great joy in donating to various causes and setting up numerous scholarships in Canada and India especially in the educational field.

George is survived by his son Vijay and his family (Lia, Rebecca, Mikayla, and Benjamin), his sister Elizabeth Thomas and her family (George, Sherry, and Danny), his late brother John Daniel's family (Daisy, Pradeep, and Preethi), his nephew Ipe Mathew and his family (Deepa, Ray and Ryan), as well as his close family friend and caregiver in his last few months of his life, Jisha Sarinbabu.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 20, 2025, with a viewing starting at 12:00 noon, and service and refreshments following at Bardal Funeral Home, 843 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg. The service will be livestreamed. The link to the live webcast can be located by the service information.

In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations may be made to Siloam Mission, 300 Princess Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3B 1M3.
