Boris Hwozdulych passed away peacefully in his home.
Predeceased by his parents, Jurij and Alexandra Hwozdulych he will be dearly missed by his sister Larysa and long-time friend Sonja Lundstrom and her family. Also mourning his loss are cousins in Ukraine.
Boris was born in Winnipeg shortly after his family immigrated to Canada from Ukraine. He attended Luxton School, St. John’s High School and graduated from Garden City Collegiate. He completed his B.A. and then graduated with an LLB (law) degree from the University of Manitoba. His entire career was as a criminal defence lawyer for Legal Aid starting in Dauphin and then Winnipeg for the last 40 plus years. He was a member of Plast Ukrainian Scouting Organization, belonged to St. Volodymyr and Olha Metropolitan Cathedral. He served on the Board of Directors of North Winnipeg Credit Union for many years.
Boris was an avid reader. Newspapers were his passion. Reading the daily Winnipeg Free Press and Weekly Globe and Mail were a must. Ukrainian history books and Consumer Reports were very much a part of his routine. In his younger years he enjoyed skiing, biking and his laser sailboat.
He was our researcher to ensure the best for everyone and had a strong moral and ethical compass that kept us all responsible. He appreciated technology, mostly through the eyes of others. Celebrating special events were at the top of his list, never missing an occasion or celebration with friends and family. He was there with his flowers and cards for them all.
He and Sonja had fun touring Ukraine, Scandinavia, Iceland, Tuscany and enjoyed road trips across Canada. Larysa’s cottage at Menominee Lake and friends and relatives brought many lake and country adventures. Picking blueberries was not his favourite but with Sonja he did it!
His greatest challenge was cancer and thanks to surgery by Dr. Kerr and successful treatments, he had overcome three more cancer challenges in the last 20 years but never gave up. Heroically he took on each new challenge and was now cancer free on his most recent visit to CancerCare. We will forever be grateful for Immunotherapy and the great people at CancerCare, Victoria Hospital Oncology and the Community Nutritional Program. We thank all who supported him along the way.
With a very generous heart he supported many Ukrainian and social organizations, never forgetting to financially support his family in Ukraine.
Visitation and funeral service officiated by Rev. Ihor Shved will be held at Korban Funeral Chapel on Thursday February 27, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. Trysna (Reception) will follow.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in his memory to Canada Ukraine Foundation, 620 Spadina Ave, Suite 200, Toronto, ON M5S 2H4.
