UTE MARTIN
After a richly dynamic life, Ute Martin (nee Osten) passed onward on April 6, 2025, at the age of 89 years.
Ute was predeceased by her husband, Peter Martin. Her daughters, Heidi, Annette, Nicola remember her with love and pride as it was mom’s influence and encouragement that freed them to pursue their dreams as well.
As a member of the Pathfinder (Girl Guides), Ute learned skills that served her well and made her an enthusiastic adventurer, foundational for the scope of some of the sparkling highlights of her career as a Grey Hare. Cross country skiing the Rockies, Mountain biking Colorado, paddling the Yukon and Green Rivers, kayaking the Everglades, just to name a few. Ute was forever in training, preparing dehydrated food, repairing her tent or mountain bike or downsizing her backpack to better fit into Winona, her canoe. All this after the age of 65!
Ute’s creative domesticity continues to thrive in her grandchildren who remember best those intimate afternoons sewing and knitting, making candles, baking Stollen, cooking jam, creating Christmas decorations. To this day, every creation remains a testament to her love, determination and pursuit of endless possibility.
Ute’s forthright manner spoke to her sincerity, honesty and courage. She was a fiercely loyal woman upon whom friends and family could always depend.
The family would like to give our sincere thanks to the staff at River East Personal Care Home who were able to provide comfort and support to all of us even through the hardship of Covid.

I joined the Grey Hares around 2001. I did not know anyone. Ute welcomed me and we had a good relationship in the Grey Hare organaisation . She took me under her wing. Any time I wanted to explore a place before taking the Grey Hare group there, she would check it out with me. I had never lead a camping trip. I asked Ute if she would join me for a few days to try out Black Lake. She went with me for a couple of days. She taught me a few things about camping. She just loved the out door. I think I took the Grey Hares to Black Lake at least 4 times after that. One day, on the 22 November 2004 , on a beautiful day , I asked Ute if she would cycle with me on River Road , Larters to Selkirk. Yes she would. We cycled to Selkirk and stopped for soup. While in the restaurant it stared snowing! We jumped on to out bicycles and raced off back to Larters. It was wet heavy snow. I have never been so cold. It did not seem to bother Ute too much, as she cycled way in front of me. We just made it back to the van, and had to sit there for quite awhile to warm up. The cold did not bother her as much as me. I think see just got used to the cold while swimming through the ice at her cottage, in the early spring! She also joined me on an experimental cycle ride through the country south of Winnipeg. We were out for hours on dirt roads exploring. I shall always remember the good time we had together with the Grey hares. - Posted by: Charles C Begley (Grey hare friend) on: May 08, 2025
