MARILYN JANE WHYTE
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Marilyn Whyte on May 24, 2025 at the age of 87.
Marilyn was born on January 25, 1938 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She attended the three neighbourhood schools in Winnipeg’s West End — Greenway, General Wolfe, and Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute (DMCI). One of the highlights of Marilyn’s public school years was her participation in DMCI’s famed choirs and operetta productions under the direction of Glen Pierce. Marilyn had a lovely soprano singing voice.
She married her former husband, George Whyte Jr. in 1960. They share two beloved children — son Allan Whyte (Leena) and daughter Candice Bell (Bruce).
As life evolved, Marilyn pursued a successful business career as a sales representative for several companies in Winnipeg and is remembered for her personable, winning style.
When she was in her early 40’s, Marilyn developed a passion for running and she became an active member of Winnipeg’s burgeoning running community. She was a strong believer that running should be more than a rigorous discipline - it should above all be fun. Over the course of her running career Marilyn completed 10 full marathons as well as many events of shorter distances. She was a founding member of the After Five Running Club.
Marilyn later added cycling to her athletic pursuits. At the peak of her decades of cycling she participated in seven 1000-mile Cycle of Hope rides. The funds raised through these rides supported Habitat for Humanity, a cause which Marilyn was proud to promote.
Through both passions — running and cycling — Marilyn formed many enriching, lifelong friendships.
During these same years Marilyn experienced the joy of becoming a grandmother to Michael Whyte (Michelle) and Dillon Whyte (Halley) as well as Nicholas Bell (Sarah) and Taylor Bell. She treasured the opportunity to be a strong supporter and champion for her grandchildren from their earliest years into adulthood. Each grandchild has numerous (and humorous) stories to relate about their beloved Grammy. They always knew that Marilyn loved them with all her heart.
Much later in life Marilyn met George Chapman through their shared interests. Their friendship became a loving relationship and partnership for the past eight years.
In addition to being survived by her children, grandchildren and partner, Marilyn leaves behind her dear sister Tish Murphy and niece Sarah Murphy both of Minneapolis. She was predeceased by her older brother Allan J. Murphy in 2015.
A celebration of Marilyn’s life will be held on June 28, 2025, at 11:00 am at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue, with a reception to follow.
The family would like to send a special thank you to the staff of Riverview Health Centre for the comfort and care they provided to Marilyn.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honour of Marilyn to Habitat for Humanity, Fort Whyte Alive and CancerCare Manitoba (Ovarian Cancer).

Rest in peace dear friend. We started school together in grade one and have been friends, and shared friends for such a long time. A heartfelt farewell to my wonderful friend Marilyn. When we met, we became instant pals. We ran together with AFRC from the early eighties till as long as I can remember. Marilyn was always a team player, and a supportive friend through good times & not-so-good times. We swapped life experiences and laughed like hyenas, along with the other AFTER-five gals and guys. I wish we’d had more time to visit after I moved to “the beach”. My love to Candice, Alan and families. My sincere sympathy to George. - Posted by: Ginny Brown (Friend) on: May 31, 2025
