SHIRLEY POPONNE

May 15, 1950 – May 21, 2025

It is with deepest sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley Poponne, who passed with family by her side in Winnipeg, Manitoba on Wednesday, May 21st at the age of 75.

Shirley was predeceased by her parents Harold Llwellyn and Julietta St. Luce and brother Avan Eugene. She is survived by her beloved husband of 53 years Freddie; son Jason (Eveline); grandchildren Dene, Amari, and Adriane; sister-in-laws Dorothy and Jane and close friend Marieanne.

Shirley was born on May 15,1950 in Roseau, Dominica W.I., the capital city of Dominica. Shirley and Freddie married in 1972 and together they worked extremely hard to build the life they dreamed of. Shirley started off as a teacher but then became a data clerk at Eaton’s. A few years later, she went to college where she became a Registered Nurse and worked in the Intensive Care Unit at the Misericordia. When the Misericordia Emergency closed, Shirley moved over to St. Boniface Hospital where she nursed for over 35 years. Finally going back to teaching at the University of Manitoba in the Faculty of Nursing.

As a mother, she was the greatest teacher and friend; patient, generous and loving, always putting others before herself. Her legacy lives on in the values she instilled and the love she provided to all that surrounded her. Shirley loved to laugh and joke around, and she loved to dance and would attend Zumba classes near her home.

Shirley will be deeply missed by her family and friends and everyone who had the pleasure of meeting her. She touched many people’s lives, and the memories of her kindness will live on forever.

Our family wishes to thank all the staff at Poseidon Long Term Care Home for the care they provided Shirley in the last year of her life.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thank you to Dr. Bosco and Dr. Hariti and all the caring nurses and hospital staff for the kindness and efforts they extended to Shirley and her family.

In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation in Shirley’s name to the St. Boniface Hospital.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • I first met Shirley when she was in the Victoria hospital where she shared a room with my friend that I was visiting. I always kept in touch with Shirley and would visit her on weekends, usually Sunday, It was with great sadness that I learned of her passing when I went to visit and found her no longer there. My prayers go to her and her family. Neither death nor time will ever be enough to erase the memories of those happy times we shared here on earth together. God bless you Shirley.
