EDWARD HANKE

June 4, 1935 - June 2, 2025

Peacefully on Monday June 2, 2025, at Riverview Health Centre, dad went home to Heaven. We know mom was waiting for him there with open arms.

He will be deeply missed by his children, Christopher and Kim (Grant); his pup Scooby, grand-dog Enzo and sisters, Joan Hanke (Rod Feller) and Judy Zoltai (Stephen).

He was predeceased by his beloved wife Christine; parents, Anne and Henry Hanke; brothers, Robert and Dennis as well as his in-laws, Ted and Mary Smith.

Dad was a Letter Carrier at Canada Post for 30 plus years. He made alot of lifelong friends there and stayed in touch with many of them after he retired.

He shared a love of golf with Chris and was happy to act as a Marshall at Kildonan Park Golf Course for many years.

Dad enjoyed his annual trips to Longboat Key, Florida with his family and over the years made many friends there that would all gather on Longboat at the same time every year. In particular his good friend Jack Reese and his wife Leslie, of New Jersey. We know that Jack and dad are enjoying a good cigar in Heaven!

Dad also enjoyed sports, with him and Chris having Blue Bomber tickets together for many years. He also loved the Winnipeg Jets and was thrilled when the Jets returned to Winnipeg.

Even though our hearts are broken, we take comfort knowing that he is at peace and has been reunited with our mom.

A special thank you to the home care and respite teams that allowed dad to remain in his own home up until the end.

Dad, we will love you always and miss you forever.

Donations may be made in dad’s memory to the Winnipeg Humane Society.

A private family burial service has taken place.

Condolences & Memories (8 entries)

  • So sorry to hear of Eddies passing. Although I haven’t seen Eddie for years I remember him as a real gentle man - quiet and fun! I hope your many happy memories will help you through this difficult time! Take care. Hugs😘 - Posted by: Lucille Johnson(Hanke) (Cousin) on: Jun 14, 2025

  • Chris, Kim and Grant, we are so sorry for your loss and that we were unable to attend the service. We have so many wonderful memories of Ed, Ed and Christine and time spent at the Hanke residence. One memory that comes to mind was when Ed tried to keep Destiny and I out past 3 am one Saturday evening. He said he was doing that as we always kept Chris out that late. Little did he know it wasn't our doing but that of Chris. lol. We spent many evenings at the Hanke residence watching hockey games, playing crib with Ed and the neighbor, and just engaged in conversations. We were fortunate enough to have had Ed and Christine in our lives for many years. They were like our extended parents and always made you feel welcome in their home and treated you like family. Chris and Kim cherish the many wonderful memories you have as he will always be with you. Hugs to you both during this difficult time. Destiny, Rob and Mathieu. - Posted by: Robert and Destiny Ferrand (Friends) on: Jun 11, 2025

  • Chris, Kim and Grant, we are so very sorry for your loss and that we were unable to attend the service. There are so many wonderful memories that come to mind when we think of Ed, Ed and Christine and times spent together. Through the years we spent many hours at the Hanke residence sometimes watching hockey, playing crib or great conversations on many topics with Ed. One memory that comes to mind is when Ed thought he would keep Destiny and I out past 3 am one Saturday night since he said we always kept Chris out. Little did he realize it wasn't us keeping Chris out. That was Chris's doing. lol. We are so grateful to have had both Ed and Christine in our lives through all these years. They were like an extended set of parents and always were more than welcoming everyone who came to their home making everyone feel like family. Chris and Kim you were blessed to have such wonderful parents. Many hugs to you both. Destiny, Rob and Mathieu Ferrand - Posted by: Robert and Destiny Ferrand (Friends) on: Jun 10, 2025

  • We were saddened to read of Ed's passing. Sending our condolences to Christopher and Kim losing both your parents within such a short period of each other. We have fun memories of the times spent in your Dad's company. Like his dear Christine, he had a great sense of humor. They were a perfect match! RIP Ed and Christine.. Good people and good friends! - Posted by: Joy & Gord French (Friends) on: Jun 08, 2025

  • I met Ed way back in 1972 working at Canada Post in Station J, third floor at 266 Graham Ave. Not only did we work together, but socialized as well. Baseball team, card games, fishing, lawn-dart tournaments at a friends cottage and just get togethers. After he retired, we talked on the phone a couple of times a year, and Kathy and I visited him and Christine a few times. Our condolences go out to daughter Kim and her husband Grant and to Christopher for taking great care of his parents all these years. Now your Mom and Dad are together again in peace, your devotion to them is done. RIP our friends - Posted by: Kathy & Rick Kaye (co-worker,friend) on: Jun 07, 2025
