With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Brian McKay of Winnipeg.
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Brian spent his early years exploring neighbourhood parks and tenement greens, always curious and full of wonder. In 1968, his family moved to Canada, where Brian’s love of discovery continued - from fishing and exploring nature to a growing passion for cars, photography, and computer gaming.
Brian spent 19 dedicated years at Agricore before continuing his career at MBLL until retirement, where coworkers quickly became close friends. Whether he was fixing word processors, troubleshooting networks, or building servers from the ground up, Brian's calm, capable presence made every challenge feel manageable.
Though he found success in IT, Brian's first dream was to become a photographer. He nurtured this passion throughout his life, capturing prairie sunsets, Winnipeg Jets games, and his many adventures with the love of his life, Anne. His creative spirit thrived in his basement studio - surrounded by music, model kits, and a passion for computer games.
Family was Brian’s proudest accomplishment. He is survived by his partner and best friend of over 20 years, Anne Fountain; his sons, Connor (Jess) and Kyle (Michelle) McKay, Todd, and Troy Fountain; grandsons, Finley and Louie; his mother Cathie; and former wife Shelly Baylak. Brian was predeceased by his younger brother, Scott, in December 2024. Throughout his life, he also shared his home and heart with beloved pets, including Bishop and Vegas.
Brian’s determination and heart carried him through to some of life’s most cherished moments: seeing the Winnipeg Jets make it to the second round of the playoffs, welcoming his grandson Louie, and spending a peaceful day in the garden oasis he and Anne built together. In his final days, he welcomed the comfort of family, friends, and the occasional Crunchie bar.
Please join us in celebrating Brian’s life on September 3, 2025 from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m., at The Gates on Roblin. Kindly RSVP to brianmckaycelebrationoflife@gmail.com

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to Brian, a man whose presence brought joy and laughter to all who knew him. Though Brian is no longer with us, his spirit lives on in the countless memories we hold dear- in every picture he took, in the conversations about the Winnipeg Jets hockey games, and in the gathering of friends in his back yard oasis. Brian enjoyed every moment he spent with Anne. Brian, you will be sadly missed, but never forgotten. Thank you for sharing your light with us all! - Posted by: Vic & Cheryl (Friends) on: Aug 09, 2025

This is a hard reminder that our time is short. Brian was one of the best leaders I ever worked for. He was a great friend and I learned a lot from him. Our time at AU was so long ago, but the friendships we made their still resonate to this day. I can thank Brian for compiling a team of like minded nerds, many of us still work together or adjacent in respective capacities throughout technology. Here's to you old friend.... - Posted by: Scott Hnytka (Coworker / Freind) on: Jul 24, 2025

I worked closely with Brian from his start at MLCC/MBLL. He share stories from his life, his love of photography and would talk about various books he was reading. I ended reading a few series that Brian introduced to me. He also kept me updated an all his sons. I could tell how proud he was and how much love and care he had for his boys and Anne. Brian will be missed. - Posted by: Travis Waywood-Joyce (Friend) on: Jul 21, 2025

Met Brian back when we were both at Agricore and became reacquainted through time at neighbouring cabins on Lake Manitoba. Shared many great visits looking out at the lake and sitting in the deck or by the fire. Was always up for a beverage & a chat about what was happening in each of our lives. Such an easy person to visit with...he became an instant friend. Loved seeing Brian capture such great lake views and sunsets. I'll sure miss him...such a very good person. - Posted by: Duane Ransome (Friend) on: Jul 21, 2025
