NADIA OLGA KARAN

December 15, 1929 - July 20, 2025

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Nadia after a long and full life.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 72 years, Edward Karan; her children, Beverly Pope (Mark Pope), Terry Karan, Marilyn Kess (Paul Kess); her grandchildren, Crystal Greenaway (Matthew Greenaway), Tyler Kess (Michele Kess), Vanessa Kess (Robbie Kalid), Evan Pope (Bryanna Halabura), Benson Pope (Turner Leggero); and her great-grandchildren Evelyn, Viola, Ethan, Brady and Isaac. She also leaves her brother Wally Stoyko and sister-in-law Rose Stoyko, along with many nieces and nephews.

Nadia was predeceased by her parents, Olympia and Harry Stoyko; her brother, Steve Stoyko, sister-in-law, Gail Stoyko and her brother and sister-in-law, Ted and June Stoyko.

Nadia was born December 15, 1929, in the village of Baluchin in western Ukraine. The second child of four children, she immigrated to Canada in 1937. She was raised on the family farm in the Municipality of Springfield, Manitoba (Cloverleaf) and attended Eastdale School. Nadia moved to Winnipeg in 1944 at the age of 15 living at 622 Stella Avenue.

While mom had many jobs, her first job was at a sewing factory where she learned to become an excellent seamstress. Many years later, her kids were the benefactors of many of her creations and some still exist today!

Nadia met Edward in 1951 at Mac’s Bowling Alley. They were married on October 18, 1952, and danced to the music of a seven piece orchestra with three saxophones. Dancing and socializing were the theme of Edward and Nadia going out dancing three times a week.

Nadia and Edward have three children; Beverly, Terry and Marilyn. All three kids took music lessons, the girls also took tap dancing lessons while Terry played on hockey teams. Purchasing a trailer in 1969, the family also spent many years camping together at Falcon Lake with trips to Banff, Alberta and Niagara Falls, Ontario. In later years cottaging at Winnipeg Beach became the getaway from the city, where all family gathered creating a lot of memories, particularly for the grandchildren.

Nadia was an excellent cook and hosted many family Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving dinners. These events were the most important to her as she cherished family being together.

To all that knew Nadia for a long time, and to those who had only met her briefly, she was always known as a very good person to all.

The family would like to thank Dr. Tuma, Dr. Prematilake, nurses Kristyn and Rachell, and all of the nurses, nursing aids and staff at Selkirk General Hospital for her brief stay there. She always said to us she liked the facility and the people who were treating her.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 737 Bannerman Avenue. Interment to follow at Holy Family Cemetery, 4355 Main Street.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church or a charity of your choice.
