ANNA BARBARA KOKAN

(nee DUMBOVIC)

Anna Barbara Kokan (nee Dumbovic) passed away on August 19, 2025, in Winnipeg at the age of 88.

She was born to Mara and Mate Dumbovic on July 14, 1937, in Cepelis, Croatia. Anna was the youngest of four children and had three older brothers: Tomo, Jure and Milan.

Anna married Ivan Kokan on January 1, 1957, in Hrastovica, Croatia. Together they had two children, Don and MaryAnn. Anna and her husband came to Canada in December of 1959 to seek a better life. She overcame many challenges, including not knowing the language. She took pride in the jobs she worked, even when they were jobs no one else was willing to do. Together, she and Ivan built a life for their family.

Anna loved spending time outdoors, especially with a fishing rod in her hand. Several places were special to her, including Bracken Falls, Balaton Beach and Winnipeg Beach. You could often find her in her garden, both admiring the flowers and enjoying her home-grown produce. She expressed her creative side through knitting and crocheting and found a love of drawing later in life.

Anna's faith and community were very important to her. She was involved in the establishment of the St. Nicholas Tavelich Church, the Croatian Women's League and the Croatian Pavilion at Folklorama. She and her family spent many Sundays at the Croatian picnic grounds (Hrvatski Travnik) enjoying pig roasts.

Anna is survived by her daughter MaryAnn (Timothy), her daughter-in-law Patricia, her grandchildren, Jessica (Dan), Michaela (Cody), Daniel (Chelsea), Renata (Kyle), Dirk, Nikolas, Gabriel, Alexander and her great-grandchildren Chylar, Braidey, Razack, Lirael, Liliana, Esmeralda, Jack and Kyle. She was preceded in death by her husband Ivan, her son Don and her three brothers.

Funeral mass will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday August 29, 2025, at St. Nicholas Tavelich Church with Father Peter Nemcek presiding. Interment will follow at Glen Eden Funeral Home and Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba.
