On September 26, 2025, L. Allan Holm of Lac du Bonnet, Manitoba, made his final pit stop at the age of 85, at home with his beloved family by his side.
Born in Gimli, Manitoba, to Sveinn Halldor (Dori) and Margaret Holm, Allan spent his early years in Gimli and Lac du Bonnet. As the middle sibling of three boys, he enjoyed a childhood full of adventures - and more than a few vehicle-related misadventures. He graduated from Lac du Bonnet Senior School in 1959 and remained a lifelong learner and avid reader. His collection of Zane Grey novels and shelves of books were a testament to this pastime.
Allan met the love of his life, Beatrice Hirst, and despite her father’s warnings about “that Holm boy,” Beatrice and Allan were married on July 20, 1963, beginning a love story that spanned 62 years.
Allan began his career in the early ‘60’s with Sovereign Life in Winnipeg. In 1965, Allan and Bea moved to Toronto after Sovereign transferred him there to be their Office Manager. In 1968, Allan returned to Lac du Bonnet to work alongside his brother Baldur, and then purchased the Powerview insurance agency shortly afterwards. While building his insurance agency, he was recruited to be the Secretary Treasurer for the Village of Powerview - a position he held for 15 years. In 1983, he sold the Powerview agency and acquired the Lac du Bonnet insurance agency, which he ran until his retirement in 2005.
Throughout his career, Allan achieved many milestones, including serving on the board of the Insurance Brokers Association of Manitoba (IBAM), expanding his insurance operations to Pinawa, Seven Sisters, and Selkirk, and becoming one of the first Brokers to earn the Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker (CAIB) designation.
Allan and Bea settled in Lac du Bonnet, where they raised their children - David, Gaylene and Mark - and built their home on the Winnipeg River. Their home on Hobo Lane became a hub of love, laughter, and family gatherings.
Allan was deeply involved in his community. He curled, played catcher in baseball, and volunteered with minor hockey. During tax season, he prepared income taxes as part of the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program. He was a founding member and longtime Treasurer of the Winnipeg River Car Club, where his passion for antique vehicles and mechanical know-how allowed him to mentor others and restore several cherished projects. Another joy was hunting at his cabin in the bush with his hunting buddy Bob Derksen.
Allan is survived by his wife, Beatrice Loreley (née Hirst); his children: David Allan (Donna), Gaylene Lorelei (Douglas), and Mark Halldor (Kerrie); and his grandchildren: Andres, Jürgen, and Tristan Holm; Samuel, Alex, and Emma Potter; Brady and Ella Holm. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law: Anne Fossay, Marlene Rollins, Laurel Torgerson, and Joanne Hirst and families.
He was predeceased by his parents, brother Leslie and wife Jeannette, brother Baldur, grandsons Tomas and Luke, and by many loved ones from both the Holm and Hirst families.
A Celebration of Allan’s Life will be held on October 6, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Lac du Bonnet Community Centre, 25 McArthur Avenue, Lac du Bonnet, MB. A private interment will follow at a later date.
