Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWILMA ELAINE JONES
Age 78 Years
Following a courageous battle with cancer Wilma slipped peacefully away at Minnedosa hospital with family by her side as was her wish. During her illness she garnered the respect of all who came to visit or call with her positive attitude. Yes there were tears but they were tears of gratitude that she had the support of family, friends and the caring staff at the hospital. One such friend said after a recent visit "Wilma is teaching us how to face adversity with grace". She treasured every visit paid by family and friends. Hopefully her positive attitude will help get us through this sorrowful time.
Left to mourn her passing are: her husband Bob, Daughter Kristi Chorney (Stan) Revelstoke, Granddaughter Logan Chorney (Luke) Fernie, Brothers-in-law Allan Jones (Lynda) Calgary, Bob McCallum Calgary, Niece Joni Forsyth (Bill) Edmonton, Ann Koscielny (Elmer) Brandon, Alexandra Stewart Qualicum Beach, Ross Stewart La Ronge, Jack Stewart (Helen) Rivers, Janice Longstaff Cardale district, Cam Stewart (Vivian) Minnedosa and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her mother and father Marg and Bill McKenzie of Brandon, Sister-in-law Trish McCallum of Calgary and first cousins Gary Stewart and Bruce Stewart of the Oak River district.
Wilma had a 28 year career with the Manitoba Department of Highways, retiring in 2002 as regional finance manager at the Brandon office. After retirement she worked part time at the Minnedosa Library. She made many friends during those years who thought very highly of her helpfulness and outgoing demeanor.
She was a self proclaimed "social butterfly". She took an interest in everyone she met and within a short time they too were friends. She will be sadly missed by her morning walking group, the kitchen bridge crew, the Legion duplicate bridge group , all her golfing buddies and the curling friends she met while becoming a lifetime member of the Minnedosa Ladies Curling club. Wilma may have been friendly but she was also a fierce competitor. She loved taking part in the ladies golf square draw and annually you could count on her being part of the Credit Union Cup team taking on the Neepawa ladies.
Wilma was grateful for her adventures with family and friends. Highlights included bicycling the Icefield Parkway from Jasper to Banff and the Golden Triangle, hiking to Lake O’hara and on the West Coast Trail, kayaking in Whiteshell Provincial Park, riding her own Harley Davidson to Sturgis and over the Going To The Sun road in Glacier Park, camping on beaches in Baja Mexico, exploring Cayman Island, Ireland, Scotland, Niagara Falls, New York, California, Arizona, British Columbia and many vacations to Riding Mountain National Park where she and Bob owned their own cabin for several years.
Wilma also gave back to the community that she loved so dearly. She was a 22 year member and past president of the Minnedosa and District Health Auxiliary, she sat on many committees at Minnedosa Golf Course representing the ladies evening and senior group, sat on the Minnedosa Complex Board and was secretary of the Minnedosa and District Foundation for many years. One of the activities she enjoyed the most was delivering meals on wheels to help people cope, always having a chat with those folks to cheer them on her rounds.
Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made to the Minnedosa and District Health Auxiliary, c/o Box 42 Minnedosa, The Minnedosa and District Foundation, Box 1980 Minnedosa or a charity of your choice.
Cremation has taken place and Wilma’s ashes are to be placed in the columbarium at Minnedosa cemetery during a private ceremony, A celebration of life in her honour will be held at a later date.
